Las Vegas hosted its now famous nighttime grand prix on Saturday as the 2025 F1 season entered its closing stages.
Lando Norris came into this weekend with a 24-point lead at the top of the drivers’ standings over McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, with Max Verstappen another 25 behind and still in with a chance of winning a fifth world championship.
It was Norris who pipped Verstappen to pole position for the race, giving the British driver a great chance to consolidate his lead at the summit ahead of the final two grands prix of the season in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

Verstappen won the Las Vegas Grand Prix after a dominant drive on the city streets.
Norris finished second ahead of George Russell, with Piastri taking P4, but the two McLaren drivers were disqualified after the race due to a technical infringement.
The skid blocks on the McLarens, the sizes of which are regulated to prevent the cars running too low and potentially gaining a pace advantage, were found to be short of the minimum depth.
The disqualifications meant Russell and Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli moved into the podium positions. Charles Leclerc was bumped up to P4, ahead of Williams’ Carlos Sainz, with Isack Hadjar in sixth and Nico Hulkenberg seventh, one place ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who had qualified in last place.
Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman gave Haas reason to cheer as they rounded out the top 10.
Norris, who surrendered the lead to Verstappen after running wide at Turn 1 and eventually finished more than 20 seconds behind the Dutchman, still has the championship race firmly under his control.
He has a 24-point lead over Verstappen and Piastri, meaning he need only take two more points than his title rivals over the course of the Qatar race weekend to be confirmed as world champion. The fact there is a sprint at the Lusail International Circuit gives him an extra opportunity.

Norris qualified on pole position for the race ahead of Verstappen, with fellow title rival Piastri down in fifth.
Sainz claimed P3 after a brilliant session in the Williams, but there was no such luck for seven-time champion Hamilton, who will start the grand prix from last place.

When can Lando Norris win the F1 driver’s championship?
Norris needs to enter the final grand prix of the season in Abu Dhabi with a lead of 25 points in order to be confirmed as world champion before that last race.
In other words, if Norris out-scores Piastri and Verstappen in Qatar by two points, he will win the championship.
Qatar is a Sprint weekend, which means a possible 33 points are available.
