The title of world number 1 in tennis is a goal that every player aspires to, but that few manage to achieve.
When it comes to men’s singles, only a handful of names have held the top spot over the past two decades.
But a new generation of talent is emerging, with young players moving up the rankings.
Who is the world number 1 in men’s tennis?
Jannik Sinner retains his place as world number 1 despite his elimination in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.
World No. 2 Novak Djokovic extends his lead over Wimbledon winner Carlos Alcaraz, with the Spaniard defending only the points he won at the All England Club last year.

How do tennis rankings work?
The world tennis rankings are calculated by the ATP, which awards points based on a player’s performance in particular tournaments.
The further a player progresses in a sanctioned event, the more points they will receive.
Grand Slam tournaments award the most points: 2,000 points are awarded to the winner and 1,200 points to the runner-up.
Points collected in each tournament are valid for one year and rankings are updated every week.

When are the tennis rankings updated?
The ATP and WTA update their rankings every Monday when tournaments are not taking place.
So, generally you can expect weekly updates, outside of periods when Grand Slam tournaments are being played.
