Discord has become a go-to communication medium for online gamers. It filled a gap when no other online service offered free communication, whether in the form of text, voice, video or image. Of course, there was Skype, which was too needy and pushy. It consumed a lot of RAM and greatly increased game latency for players. Truth be told, Skype was never intended to be used by gamers.

Discord is free and, from the looks of it, it’s here to stay. Like other platforms, it is not free from annoying, toxic or downright rude comments from others. You can create your own server or join another. Each server has its own set of rules configured by the server owner and administrators.

If other users are violating your server rules or just getting on your nerves, how do you handle it? Luckily, you can kick them or, if they cross the line, hit them with the ban hammer.

Will the banned user know that I have banned them?

It’s a logical question. You may not want to hurt the person’s feelings and you probably don’t want them to rejoin your server with a different username as soon as they realize they were booted.

Fortunately, Discord does not notify other users when they have been banned or booted. The best thing is that they won’t know WHO kicked them. The latter is especially beneficial for servers with multiple administrators.

Now, just because they won’t receive a notification doesn’t mean they won’t know they’ve been banned. The server will completely disappear from your server list after being kicked. So, it’s still obvious. We’ll talk about this in a little more detail below, but first, let’s review how to ban someone and how they could potentially get back to your server undetected.

How to ban, ban or delete users on Discord

Owning or moderating a Discord server can be very demanding at times. Since Discord is free, you can have multiple accounts and switch between them as much as you want. This allows some annoying people to be really annoying and difficult to deal with.

How to kick or kick someone:

  1. Open Discord on your phone or in a computer browser.
  2. Go to the desired server using the sidebar on the left.
  3. Select the channel you want to kick someone from.
  4. Find your username in the right bar or manually search the channel’s message history.
  5. Right click on your name and a drop-down menu will appear.
  6. Select Kick “username” near the bottom of the list.

Note: Kicking someone is not a permanent solution. This user can easily rejoin your server if it is public or if someone already on the server sends them a new invitation.

How to kick or prune people en masse:

  1. If your server is too large and there are many inactive users who have not logged in for a while, you can delete them.
  2. Open your server settings located in the top left corner.

  3. You will see a list of members on the right side and the roles you assigned them. Above this list is the Prune option.

  4. Choose the amount of time they had to remain idle to be booted. It can be one, seven or thirty days. You will see the number of users that will be banned in each case.
  5. This will not start players who already have roles assigned to the server.

How to ban a user on Discord:

  1. To ban someone on Discord, follow the steps above but select Ban “username” instead of Kick.
  2. A window will appear with additional options.
  3. You can choose to delete this user’s messages in the channel for different periods of time. This is a real time saver as you won’t have to delete them manually.
  4. You can also notify them of the reason they were banned. However, this is optional.
  5. Once you are done, confirm by pressing Ban.
  6. When a user is banned, they cannot return to their server, that is, the ban is permanent.

How to unban a Discord user:

  1. In case you change your mind and decide to forgive someone, you can always unban them.
  2. Access your server settings in the top left corner, above all your channels.
  3. A drop-down menu will appear, with Bans at the bottom of the list.
  4. You will see a chronological list of all the users you have previously banned.
  5. When you click on someone’s username, you’ll see the reason you banned them and an option to unban them. Click the “Revoke Ban” button and the user will be able to rejoin your server.

Note: The “Reasons for ban” section is a useful tool, especially for larger servers where there are multiple administrators. Other administrators or the server owner can revoke the ban if they think the punishment was too extreme or for a silly reason.

What happens when you kick or kick someone?

Kicking people off your server can hurt their feelings if they notice. There is no notification alerting Discord users that they have been removed from a server. They can only see the server that is missing from their server list.

Users who were kicked can rejoin if their server is public or if they receive a new invitation to return. This is especially good for users involved in the pruning process. They get a second chance if they did nothing wrong. The ban is a permanent solution for users whose violations are too serious to be reviewed.

Unfortunately, Discord uses IP addresses for bans, so you may a member can circumvent the ban. You will have the option to report a particular user for violating Discord’s terms of use. If the violations are considered serious and justified, the user will receive a complete ban from using Discord.

If you need a little help moderating your servers, you can always install a Bot.
