Are the Philadelphia Eagles a safe playoff team in 2024? Call it recency bias, but most NFL analysts seem to be The Eagles Fade Away in preseason projections.
Take Will Brinson from CBSSports.com, for example. Brinson recently published his Win-loss predictions for each team in the 2024 NFL seasonand he picked the Eagles with an average score of 9-8. Here’s Brinson’s reasoning:
My projection runs counter to Vegas’ implied success Eaglesand that’s largely because I expect a slow start to the season for Philly. I still see them as a likely playoff team, but they draw the Packers and three-quarters of the NFC South to start before a Week 5 bye. They have a new offensive coordinator Kellen Mooreand while it’s an improvement, there are some concerns after seeing the Chargers last year, as well as the natural acclimation time. The loss of Jason Kelce And Fletcher Cox — the literal backbone of the offense and defense, respectively — has been somewhat overlooked this offseason. Howie Roseman has done a remarkable job replacing both up front by recruiting Cam Jurgens And Jordan Davisbut there’s a chance this team will get off to a bit of a slow start as they adjust to all the changes.
Seth Walder, writing for ESPN Analytics, had a similar opinion with an overall result more palatable to Eagles fans. 2024 NFL Season SimulationWalder put the Eagles on the playoff bubble after a 6-6 start, before surging late in the season to win the NFC East division title with an 11-6 record.
But the Eagles’ simulation season takes a surprising turn in the playoffs. Starting second in the NFC, the Eagles are defeated by the seventh-seeded Chicago Bears, 23-17, in the wild-card round. A home playoff loss to Chicago and a rookie quarterback? That would be a total failure for head coach Nick Sirianni and his teammates.
The Eagles did it get some love from Pro Football Network and former NFL player Ross Tucker likes his chances in 2024. It might take a while, but all indications are that the Eagles will be a problem in the NFC this season.
