Chelsea’s rising star Cole Palmer has revealed the surprising story behind his move to Stamford Bridge — and how it nearly didn’t happen.
The former Manchester City talent, now a standout player for the Blues and England, admits he was close to rejecting the transfer. He has since become Chelsea’s stand-out attacking fulcrum.
Palmer’s journey to Chelsea was far from a straightforward decision. After leaving his boyhood club, Manchester City, in the summer of 2023, Palmer initially intended to seek more playing time through a loan rather than a permanent move.
Although he was eager to play regularly, he never anticipated a transfer to Chelsea.
“I wasn’t even gonna go [to] Chelsea,” Palmer recently said. “I got persuaded.”
This change of heart came as he recognised there would be limited opportunities in Pep Guardiola’s star-studded squad. Watching players of a similar age get chances to shine in the Premier League over him, Palmer realised he was ready to make his mark elsewhere.
Palmer describes his last day with City as rushed and unexpected. “Every time the ball went out [in training], I’d ask the kit man if they’d agreed the fee yet.”
When the transfer was finalised, Palmer barely had time to say goodbye. He shared a brief farewell in a group message before heading off to start a new chapter in London.
Cole Palmer’s career at Chelsea so far
Since joining Chelsea, Palmer has thrived. The former Man City star made 46 appearances in his debut season with the Blues, scoring 25 goals and bagging 15 assists and six end-of-season awards.
He has since netted seven goals in 13 appearances this season, instantly making him a key player for new manager Enzo Maresca.
It seems the choice he nearly didn’t make has led to the opportunity of a lifetime.
