How do you know if someone has read your GroupMe message?

GroupMe is a convenient tool that helps you organize larger groups of people. It is different from other text messaging apps that focus on one-on-one conversations.

Instead, it focuses primarily on group conversations. Therefore, the interface is a little different and some functions can be a little confusing or non-existent.

For example, if you want to know who read your GroupMe message, you might be surprised. There is a situation where it works, but more often than not you find yourself desperately searching for the notification.

When can you see the “Read” notification?

There’s only one way to make sure someone has read your GroupMe message. That’s only if you use a direct message.

When you send a direct message to a GroupMe user, you’ll see a small “Sent” alert below. That means your message reached the recipient, but it hasn’t been opened yet.

When the other user opens the message and reads it, the alert below will say “Read.” This way, you’ll know that the recipient opened your message.

All in all, there isn’t much difference between GroupMe and other instant messaging apps. Everyone has their own method of notifying you that your message has been read or “viewed.”

What about GroupMe group chats?

Unfortunately, there’s no way to know who read your message in a GroupMe group chat.

The tool will not let you know which group member saw the message. This is a disadvantage compared to other similar instant messaging applications like Messenger. Those apps notify you after each person receives the message.

There is also no viable way to solve this problem. So if you want to know if a particular group member received the message, try sending a direct message.

How to send a direct message on GroupMe?

Direct message is a private conversation between you and another GroupMe user. You can use it to find out if that specific user received and read your message.

Since GroupMe works better for a larger number of users, one-on-one conversations take a backseat. That is why it is not easy to access it.

But this is what you have to do.

1. Open the home screen of the GroupMe app.
   
2. Tap the “Menu” icon at the bottom right of the app.
   
3. Select the “Contacts” menu to open the contact list.
   
4. Find the user you want to send the message to.
   
5. Enter the body of the message.
   
6. Select “Submit.”
   

There is also a way to send a direct message to a user if they share a group.

1. Open the group with the desired user from the GroupMe home screen.
   
2. Tap the “Members” button.
   
3. Find the person you want to text.
4. Tap their profile picture (avatar).
   
5. Select “Send direct message” from the menu.
   

That will redirect you to a separate conversation with this user. Also, note that you cannot text SMS users via direct messages.

Can you delete messages before others see them?

GroupMe lets you hide messages from your device, but you can’t delete them for everyone. So if you’ve sent something you shouldn’t have sent, there’s no way to delete it. Other users will see it anyway.

If you want to hide those messages or conversations from your device, you can follow these steps:

1. Choose the conversation you want to hide from the GroupMe home screen.
   
2. Find the message you want to hide.
   
3. Press and hold on that message to access the menu (or right-click if you’re using a PC).
4. Tap “Hide Message.”
   

If you hide the last message you sent, you won’t be able to see if the other user saw it.

But since all messages remain in the database, you can choose to “show” them.

1. Tap the inpidual user’s avatar.
   
2. Select “Settings.”
   
3. Tap “Show hidden messages.”
   

That will show all the messages in the conversation that you have previously hidden.

How do I turn off read receipts in GroupMe?

If you don’t want another user to know about your interactions with their messages, you can turn off read receipts for GroupMe direct messages. In the upper left corner, tap the three horizontal lines. From there, tap “Settings.” Finally, scroll down to the Read Receipts option and turn off the option.

This is also the explanation for when you can’t see someone else’s receipts when you DM them. If a user has this option disabled, they will not be able to see their receipts.

I don’t see anyone else’s read receipts. Have I been blocked?

Unfortunately, there is no way to be sure if another user has blocked you. If you don’t see a read receipt but the other user responds to your message, you can be sure that you haven’t been blocked, the other user has the feature disabled.

However, if the other person doesn’t respond, there’s really no way to know. This is because when a user blocks you, you can still see their messages in groups. Some users have claimed that when they try to send a message to a contact who has blocked them, the message disappears after a few minutes. But we could not replicate this in May 2021.

Pay attention to your messages

All in all, GroupMe is a great tool for organizing larger groups, but there is a notable lack of certain features.

The lack of a “Seen” option for group conversations may put off many users. If you are one of those who prefers to know the status of the message, you may want to switch to another application.
