The New England Patriots won’t ever ask Drake Maye to be Tom Brady, but for the second consecutive week, the second-year quarterback is forcing himself into the same conversation as the NFL legend.
Maye only threw for 222 yards in a win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, but it was his efficiency that beat Brady’s career-high and set a new Patriots record.
New England kept the good times rolling with its fourth consecutive victory, maintaining its place atop the AFC East for at least one more week and exceeding the Patriots’ 2024 win total with No. 5 on the season.

Maye finished 21-of-23 for 222 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday’s win, also flashing his mobility with 62 yards on the ground. The highlight of the day was a go-ahead 39-yard touchdown pass to Kayshon Boutte near the end of the first half.

The eye-popping number in Maye’s stat line is his 91.3 percent completion rate. Not only is that a career-high for the young quarterback, but it exceeds Brady’s career-high between the Patriots and Buccaneers and sets a New England record. Brady topped out at an 88.5 completion percentage against the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2009, but he never hit 90 percent.
Maye has a long way to go to even be in most conversations with Brady, but he has broken a Brady record in back-to-back weeks. Last week, Maye posted a passer rating of at least 100.0 in his fifth consecutive game, something Brady never did until his eighth season, and he completed 70 percent of passes for at least 200 yards in his fifth consecutive game, something Brady never did. Maye extended both streaks in Sunday’s victory.

Maye became the first player in Patriots history to complete at least 90 percent of passes in a start, finishing 21-of-23 in a dominant performance against the Titans.
Brady had 10 games with a completion percentage of 80.0 or better during his long tenure with the Patriots, but his career-high of 88.5 percent came in 2009. Brady only posted three games with a completion rate of 85.0 percent or better in his career, all with New England.
After the game, Maye joked, “I left some out there,” when asked about setting the Patriots’ efficiency record.
With a 5-2 record and a quarterback who seemingly can do no wrong at the moment, the Patriots have to be feeling as positive as they have since Brady was under center, even if the legend himself is impossible to match.
