Google Contacts is a tool that allows you to sync all your Gmail contacts in one place. The feature makes it easy to navigate your contact list and can save you a lot of time when sending emails.

Because they’re created by the same company, Google Contacts and Gmail easily work hand in hand. Adding contacts in Gmail means you’ll also add them to Google Contacts.
In this article, you’ll learn how to add new contacts to Gmail and get the most out of this incredibly useful tool.
How to Add New Contacts to Gmail from a Windows PC, Mac, or Chromebook
Gmail and Google Contacts are accessed through the browser on your desktop or laptop. Additionally, there are two main ways to add contacts to Gmail on a desktop and laptop device: from the Gmail page or by using the online Google Contacts feature. So no matter what device you’re using, adding contacts to your Gmail works pretty much the same way.
Add contacts using Gmail
Let’s say you received an email from a business partner or friend and you don’t want to have to search for the original email message and copy the address every time you want to send them an email. If you access your Gmail account through desktop, adding them to an easy-to-access contact list has been made very easy:
- Go to your Gmail inbox.

- Open the email of the contact you want to add to your contact list.

- Hover over the contact’s name or photo with your mouse pointer.

- Click on “Add contacts.”

That’s it, you have successfully added the contact to your list.
Add contacts using Google Contacts
You may have never used the Google Contacts web tool, or if you have, you use it infrequently. In fact, you probably use it much less frequently than Gmail. But it may be helpful to know that adding contacts to Google Contacts on both desktop and laptop devices has been made simpler and easier. First, it may be helpful to know that you have two options when creating contacts using Google Contacts: create an inpidual contact and create a group contact.
The first option is self-explanatory. The last option makes it easy to send recurring group emails. Here’s how to create both.
- Go to Google Contacts in your preferred browser.

- Navigate to the bottom right corner of the page.

- Click the plus (+) icon.

- Select “Create a contact” either “Create multiple contacts.”

- Enter required/optional information or email addresses for future group members.

- Click on “Save” either “Create.”

How to add new contacts to Gmail using mobile/tablet devices
When you use the Gmail app on an Android or iOS device, you won’t be able to add contacts through the app. The option simply does not exist. Maybe Google will add this option at some point, but for now, it’s not possible.
Secondly, the Google Contacts app exists only for Android devices. However, iOS users should know that the mobile web version of the app looks and works quite identically to the Android app version. So if you want to access Google Contacts through your iOS device, navigate to Google Contacts within a browser. If you’re already signed in to your Google account, you won’t have to worry about entering any credentials either. Here’s how to access this.
- Open the Google Contacts app (on Android) or navigate to your mobile web browser version (on iOS).

- Follow the same instructions explained above for the desktop version.
How to add Gmail contacts to Outlook
Although Gmail is by far the most popular email app in the world, some people prefer to use Outlook as their go-to email app. Both have their advantages. On the one hand, Gmail has a clean, simple interface that is easy to understand and navigate. On the other hand, while Outlook is not complicated, it is somewhat more complex than Gmail. This is because Outlook has advanced features that can help email “power users.”
So if you’ve decided to switch from Gmail to Outlook, or want to use both but also want to import contacts from Gmail, here’s how to do it. Please note that exporting contacts from Google Contacts works the same on all devices.
Export contacts
Before the standalone Google Contacts feature was created, you had to export contacts through Gmail. Now you don’t even have to use the Gmail website. Here’s how to do it.
- If you do not want to export all the contacts in your list, select the ones you want to export.
- Navigate to the left panel.

- Select “Export.”

- Choose “Selected contacts” either “Contacts”.

- Low “Export as”check “Outlook CS.”

- Click on “Export.”

Import contacts from Gmail to Outlook
You will need to have Outlook 2013 or 2016 to successfully import contacts from Gmail.
- In Outlook, go to “Archive” eyelash.

- Select “Open and export”.

- Gonna “Import from another program or file” and select “Next.”

- Select “Values Separated by Commas” and click “Next.”

- Choose how you want duplicate contacts to be handled and go to “Next.”

- Now, select the folder where you saved the exported Gmail contacts and click “Next.”

- Click on “Finish.”
That’s all. You have successfully imported contacts from Gmail to Outlook.
Google and Gmail Contacts
Adding contacts to Google Contacts will make them available in Gmail in the same account. So when you send messages using Gmail, start typing the name of the contact you want to send an email to and their full email address will start filling in automatically.
Google Contacts exists outside of Gmail for a good reason. The feature is more than just a storage solution for your email contacts. Google Contacts can sync and organize key information related to your inpidual contacts. In addition to searching for an email address, you can enter information such as your phone number, a link to the company the contact works for, even specific notes about the contact (their birthday, job title, etc.).
Add new contacts to Gmail and work with Google contacts
Google has made adding new contacts to Gmail very easy and straightforward. In fact, they’ve gone to great lengths to create an entire feature, Google Contacts, to consolidate your contact information in one place.
We hope this post has helped you efficiently add new contacts to your Gmail account through Gmail itself or through Google Contacts. We also hope that you will now use the Google Contacts feature more widely. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us in the comments section below.
