How to add someone to a group text on iPhone

Group messaging (also known as group texting) is a pretty amazing feature on iPhones and iPads running iOS 10 and iOS 11.

As your message evolves, you may want to include more people. It is important to mention that there is a difference between group iMessage and group messages. In Apple lingo: a group iMessage is when everyone in the group uses an iPhone. This makes it possible to add/remove members from your text group.

Group messages are actually sent using the cellular network’s SMS features because active users use a combination of iPhone and Android devices. If this is your situation, you will have to create a new text thread with or without the contacts.

How to start a group text

There are quite a few other apps on the market that support group texting, but for this particular article, we’ll focus on the ubiquitous i.Messages app that most iPhone and iPad users use every day.

One of the best things about Apple products is the ability to use the iMessage app on multiple devices. The options listed below apply to all Apple products, including Mac, MacBook, iPhone, and iPad.

So, if you’re ready to invite people to your group chat, follow these instructions:

1. From your iPhone, locate the Messages app and tap to open it.
   
   
2. Exit any conversation you’re already in by tapping the arrow key at the top left. From the Messages screen, touch the New message icon located in the upper right corner (it looks like a notepad with a pen).
   
3. You can start typing the names of the people you want to invite in the TO: area. If the guests are people already in your address book, it should auto-complete as you type their name or number. You can also touch the + icon to navigate through your contact list.
   
   For those who are not in your address book, within the TO: , enter the recipient’s phone number. If you intend to add people who use an iPad, you can enter your Apple ID.
4. Repeat the steps above until all intended recipients have been added to the TO: field.
   
5. Type the message you want to send. You will only need to write it once.
   
6. Finally, hit the Send button.
   
   

Now every member you add will receive that message. This allows all members of the text group to respond and also see each other’s responses. Of course, recipients can opt out of receiving text messages from the group at any time, or you can remove them from the group yourself (see TechJunkie’s article on remove someone from a group message).

Please note that not all emojis or animations will work for everyone in the group. This is especially true for those with different versions of iOS or alternative operating systems in general. However, the text messages themselves should be fine.

How to add someone to a group text

If you’re already actively engaged in a conversation with one or more people or simply forgot to add someone originally, I can explain how to add them. What you do is:

1. From your iPhone, locate the Messages app and tap to open it.
   
   
2. Select the conversation you want to add a person to and tap to open it.
   
3. Play the Information (looks like an i in a circle), which is located in the upper right corner of the screen.
   
4. Tap on Add contact.
   
5. Within Add: Type the name of the person you are adding (if they are already located in your address book) or type their full phone number.
   
   Again, for those who use iPad, you can enter your Apple ID if it makes things easier for you.
6. To finish it, go ahead and tap Made.
   
   

How to remove someone from a group text

If you prefer to remove a contact from the conversation, follow the same steps listed above to access the group details.

1. Once you have reached the contact list, you can swipe the contact name to the left, which will display a red color. Eliminate option.
2. Tap the option to Eliminate and confirm the task when it appears. MacBook and Mac users will see an option to Delete.
   

How to leave the group message conversation

Are there too many things happening in a conversation that you are no longer interested in listening to? It’s actually quite easy to leave a group conversation as long as that group consists of three or more people. If a particular conversation has run its course, you can:

1. Open the Messages app and go to the conversation you want to free yourself on.
   
2. Tap on the Information icon (which is inside a circle, located in the upper right corner of the screen).
   
3. Quickly take advantage of the option of Leave this conversation appears in bright red and is located at the bottom of the page.
   
4. Tap the confirmation option when it appears and you will no longer be notified about the activity.
   

Group messaging is a standout feature, but some people don’t enjoy constant updates and alerts on their phones. It’s a great feature; It just needs to be used carefully to avoid overwhelming yourself and others with group messages.

Troubleshooting Group iMessages

Some users have reported that they cannot add more than a certain number of contacts to their text messages on an iPhone. This may surprise you, but certain carriers have created these limitations to protect users from spam messages.

• If you need to network with large groups of people, it is best to choose another messaging app. Google Hangouts, Slack, and more are available on the App Store. Many of these third-party applications are more versatile and easier to use for communicating between various platforms and operating systems.
• If you are having trouble adding multiple members, it may be due to operator limitations. It can also be attributed to incorrect contacts. If you’ve ever synced your contacts with your email, you may have some with email addresses instead of phone numbers. This may work with iCloud accounts but not other emails. Check that the contact you are trying to add is correct.
• Another problem you may have when adding a contact to an iMessage group is trying to add someone with screen time limits. With the addition of Apple’s Screen Time comes the possibility of users closing features on their Apple devices, including iMessage. If you’re having trouble adding a contact, it’s a good idea to ask them if they have these limitations set.
