Video recordings of meetings can be important for a company. A recorded meeting video is useful in many ways: you can review what happened and follow up on ideas, use the recordings as training materials for new employees, use them as a reference, or show them to someone who couldn’t attend the meeting. .
In this article, we’ll explain what it takes to record a meeting on Google Meet, who can record it, and how to do it automatically.
Turn recordings on and off
First of all, to record something on Google Meet you need to be a registered user of one of the Google Workplace plans, which are not free. There are specific editions of Workplace that allow recording: Essentials, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Editions (Starters, Essentials, Plus, Standard), Education Plus, Teaching and Learning Upgrade, and Workspace Inpidual Subscriber.
An organization’s Google Workspace administrator can record meetings in Google Meet. As an administrator, you can allow participants to record the meeting and then share it with others, for example someone who couldn’t attend. Teachers can record a class while in their Google Workspace account; As organizers, you can allow your students to record the class as well. On the other hand, the administrator can also disable recording for other participants.
The most important thing to know is that recording is not automatic, meaning someone must start recording for each meeting separately.
Two steps need to be completed before you can adjust the recording settings. First, you need to check if the recording option is available, which means you must have the Workspace edition that supports recording. The other step is to ensure that Drive and Docs are activated, that is, allowing users to access recordings in Google Drive.
The third step is to activate the recording function in Google Meet. This is how you do it:
- Sign in to the Google Admin Console with your administrative account.

- Find the “Applications” option.

- Go to “Google Workspace.”

- Then go to “Google Meet.”

- Tap “Meet Video Settings” to apply the settings for everyone.

- Click “Recording.”

- If you want other people to record as well, check the “Allow people to record your meetings” box.

- Click the “Save” option.

Now, in addition to the administrator, other people can also record a meeting. Please note that the administrator must allow recordings for another account, that is, activate it. Accounts that can also record under these conditions are the host of the meeting, a co-host from an organization other than the host, the host of the organization but only when the “Host Management” option is disabled, and the teacher or co-teacher on Google. Classroom.
How to record on Google Meet
You can record a Google Meet meeting using web and mobile apps. Here’s how to record a meeting in the web app:
- Open the web application.

- Touch the three points.

- Click “Start Recording.”

In the mobile app, do this:
- Open the mobile app.

- Click on the menu located in the lower right corner of the screen.

- Select the “Start recording” option.

An orange circle will appear next to your username, letting meeting participants know that you are recording them. If you have to leave unexpectedly in the middle of the meeting, recording will continue until the meeting ends and all other participants have left.
How to record automatically
As mentioned above, recordings cannot be automatic since an administrator or someone else must press that button and start recording for each meeting. So, if you don’t have a Google Workspace membership, third-party software can help you record your Google Meet meetings.
Use MeetPro
You can automatically record while using Google Meet, but you also need Meet Pro and its features. Meet Pro requires Google Workspace and has an automatic recording feature.
This feature can be configured to start recording from the moment a user joins Google Meet. Additionally, if you don’t want it to automatically start recording the meeting right away, you can set it to prompt you to turn on recording manually. This feature is not free, but it is very useful if you keep forgetting to start recording.
Use Notta AI
Another way to record your meeting on Google Meet is through Notta, which is free. Notta is an AI-based speech-to-text transcription service that supports 104 languages. When synced with other devices, you can access recordings that you can also transcribe. This AI can also help you record all your meetings. All you need to do is link Google Calendar and Notta. The app’s bot can then start recording your Google Meet meetings automatically. This is how you link your calendar to AI:
- Log in to your account in the Notta tool.

- Click the “Upcoming Video Calls” option in the sidebar of your screen.

- Click “Connect your Google Calendar.”

- Allow access to Notta.

- Check the boxes to access and go to “Continue”.

Once you’ve completed these steps, Notta can sync with your Calendar and note all scheduled video calls that exist there. You can choose which ones you want Notta to record automatically. Your Google Meet meetings can always be found in the Notta dashboard, under the “Upcoming video calls” option.
You can start recording when you tap the “Start Recording” option. The Notta bot will join the Google Meet meeting and start transcribing and recording in real time as soon as it starts.

Recording your meetings is beneficial

This is very useful in case you need to review the recording or share it with someone who couldn’t attend that meeting.
