In Minecraft, players gradually learn better materials and items the longer they survive. Starting with simple dirt blocks, you’ll eventually dig deeper into caves and see some lava, which can easily be turned into obsidian. However, creating this strong rock involves much more than pouring water on lava.
Obsidian is an essential material in Minecraft necessary to reach the Nether. Fortunately, it’s not difficult to get enough of these blocks. Continue reading to learn more.
Creating obsidian in minecraft
Lava occurs naturally in many places in the overworld. The easiest way to find some is to dig deep into a cave system, as that is usually where rivers and lava pools are found. Lava is also found in naturally generated buildings.
To create obsidian, all that is required is to pour a bucket of water over the lava. As you do so, the hot liquid rock cools and turns into the black and purple rock known as obsidian. You can then mine the obsidian with a diamond pickaxe.
Lava can also be stored in buckets. If you have some, bring some and leave the cave system. You can dig a hole, pour in lava, and make obsidian by cooling the hot material with water.
Creating a huge hole allows you to save some lava that can be collected with an empty bucket. Because only lava that comes into contact with water cools, obsidian will create a wall between the lava and the water. Liquids will flow as long as possible if there is a fountain.
As such, you can potentially get unlimited obsidian if you organize the sources correctly.
Still, there is another way to obtain a lot of obsidian from natural sources. As you explore the world, you may find rivers of lava on the surface. Pour water over them to turn the top layer into obsidian.
However, it would help to be careful when mining obsidian. The layer beneath the rock is still lava, meaning it can hurt you and burn the mined obsidian. The solution is to place some water around the mining site so that it flows into the lava before it burns anything.

Making a hole and pouring lava into it is the simplest obsidian farm, but there are ways to increase the yield. This is done by spewing lava down a structure. This is how a basic lava casting process works:
- Fence the area below so the lava doesn’t overflow.
- Pour the lava and wait for it to flow to the bottom.
- Fill the empty bucket with lava.
- Pour water over the lava.
- Enjoy the view of lava hardening into obsidian.
- Mine to your heart’s content.
The structure can be as tall as you want or any size you can handle. It doesn’t have to be a ladder either. A pyramid or tower is acceptable as long as the lava can flow in an orderly manner and you contain it.
Lava smelting is great for collecting obsidian, but you can also use it to build large structures from the solid material. Obsidian resists Creeper blasts and many other attacks without giving way, and bases made from it last forever.
An obsidian generator
Obsidian farms are good, but obsidian generators automate the soaking process. Once the generator starts working, you can leave it like that until the chests fill up. Here are the necessary materials.
- four chests
- Two hoppers
- a dispenser
- red stone powder
- Three hatches
- a block of stairs
- Two Redstone Torches
- A Redstone Comparator
- buckets of water
- lava cubes
You’ll probably spend some time creating some of these objects. Once you have them all, follow these steps:
Part 1
- Dig a 2×1 hole in the ground.
- Place a large chest in the hole.
- Face the hole vertically and place a hopper on one of the chest halves.
- Place a block to the left of the hopper.
- Drop a nonflammable ladder block onto the block facing the hopper.
- Surround the sides not facing the hopper with hatches and activate them.
- Pour water on the stair block when the hatches surround it.
- Break the block from step 4.
- Leave a Redstone Comparator to the right of the hopper and place a building block to its right.
- Place a Redstone Torch on top of the block.
Part 2
- Drop a block on top of the first Redstone Torch and place another Redstone Torch on it.
- Place another block to the left of the one from Step 9 in the previous section.
- Equip Redstone Dust and drop some on the block.
- To the left of the block above, attach a dispenser pointing downwards.
- Put a hopper connecting to the dispenser.
- Place a large chest on top of the hopper.
- Insert a button into the dispenser.
- Pour lava into the chest at the top and press the button.
- Start holding the left mouse button to mine.
- Pick up your obsidian when it’s ready.
As you can see, this process is incredibly convenient. You still need to mine the obsidian manually, but it’s much faster than using a mold or hole.
Virtually indestructible
It is impossible to mine obsidian without a diamond pickaxe, which means that diamonds will always be necessary if you want to farm them. Fortunately, diamonds aren’t difficult to find, while lava and water can be reused if you collect them quickly enough. Knowing how to make obsidian is essential for building abyssal portals and more.
