Discord users are identified not only by their usernames but also by Discord tags. In fact, many consider labels part of their identity and may become attached to them over time.
In this article, we’ll show you how to create memorable tags in Discord, either randomly or through the Discord Nitro perk.
What are Discord tags?
A Discord tag is a unique numerical indicator next to your username. It goes from #0001 to #9999. You might be wondering how Discord can maintain that uniqueness if it has millions of users but only 10,000 tags. Simple. Well, consider your username as part of the tag. To put it clearly, Bob#0001 is different from Bobby#0001. They are treated as separate Discord tags.
Can you change your Discord tags?
The short answer is yes, but you can only get a custom tag if you have Discord Nitro or a Discord Nitro Classic subscription. Please note that Discord partners also have the ability to customize their tags. The platform offers this, among other advantages, as a benefit for supporting developers.
You can still change your Discord tag to some other random number even without Nitro. However, doing so involves using a bot. The randomness involved means that getting an interesting tag like #0001 or #1337 has a one in 10,000 chance.
What is Discord Nitro?
Discord Nitro and Discord Nitro Classic are premium subscription services offered by the platform to its users. Casual users can get along without having to subscribe. Nitro and Nitro Classic are aimed at those who use the platform frequently. People who consider Discord an integral part of work or play can greatly benefit from its additional features.
What is a Discord partner?
Discord users who have large followers or members of non-profit organizations have the opportunity to become Discord Partners. The platform developers express their support for the communities that support them. To qualify as a Discord partner, you must be one of the following:
- A Reddit community with over 8,000 subscribers.
- A social media personality or content creator with over 10,000 subscribers.
- A nonprofit organization with a valid EIN.
- A very large guild or community of players.
Those who meet the requirements should already be using the Discord app. If you qualify, you only need to fill out a form on the Discord Partnership page to submit a formal application.
So, I have a Nitro subscription/I’m a Discord partner. How do I change the labels?
To change your Discord tag, all you have to do is follow these instructions:
- Open your User Settings by clicking the gear icon next to your username.
- On the My Account page, click your label and replace it with the number you want. The allowed numbers range from #0001 to #9999.
- Enter your account email and password.
- Click Save.
I don’t have/want a Nitro subscription. Now what?
You can still change your Discord tags even without a Nitro subscription. However, the change is random and you will need to use a Discord Bot as a workaround. This works because no two people can have the same Discord username and tag. Discord allows you to change your username, albeit with a timer of one hour per edit. If you enter a username that already has the same tag as yours, you will be assigned a different tag.
What is a bot?
A Discord bot is essentially a set of programming commands that are configured to run in the Discord app to attempt to mimic a user’s behavior. Users can modify them to behave according to their needs by changing these commands. One of the commands that a Discord bot can use is! One of the easiest bots to use would be Unbeleivaboat.com. It only requires that you add it to your server to use its commands.
To do so, follow these steps.
- Open your Discord and create a server.
- Go to Unbelievaboat.com.
- Click Invite to Discord.
- Choose your server and click continue.
- Click Authorize and verify the captcha.
- On the text entry line, type !discrim.
- You will then be shown a list of users with the same tag as yours. Keep in mind that sometimes you will be the only one there. Happens. Wait a moment for other users to log in and try again.
- Once you find another user with the same tag, copy their name.
- Go to user settings
- Replace your username with the copied name.
- Enter your email and password and then click save.
- You will then be assigned a random user tag.
You won’t be able to change your name again immediately as Discord has a cooldown timer for editing names. Wait about an hour and then you can change your name again with your new user tag.
