How to delete group chats on GroupMe

Unfortunately, there is no way to delete an entire chat in GroupMe. Although many users have been asking for this option, there has been no change to fix this issue since launch. However, you have a couple more options that may be useful.

How to delete chat history in GroupMe

Do you have chats that are no longer active? Clearing your chat history can be a way to get rid of unwanted conversations. To do that, follow the steps below.

1. Open the GroupMe app on your device.
   
2. Locate the chat history you want to delete and tap or click to open it.
   
3. Select the chat image and choose “Settings” from the menu.
   
   
4. In the “Settings” menu, tap or click “Clear chat history.”
   
5. A confirmation window will appear. Click “Delete” to confirm your choice and your chat history will be deleted.
   

Note: The “Settings” button may be located in a different area than mentioned above, depending on the device you are using.

How to hide a chat in GroupMe

Hiding a chat is done differently depending on devices. Locate the device you own below and follow the corresponding instructions.

Windows PC

1. Find the chat you want to hide.
   
2. Select the chat avatar.
   
3. Choose “Settings” and from that menu select “Hide Chat.” Now you will no longer see the chat on your computer.
   

You change your opinion? To display a chat, do the following:

1. Open GroupMe and go to the “Open Navigation” menu.
   
2. Select “Archive” and you will see the list of hidden chats.
   
3. Select the chat you want to show.
   
4. Select the chat image.
   
5. Click on the “Settings” icon and choose the “Show chat” option.
   

Android devices

1. Launch the GroupMe app on your phone or tablet.
   
2. Find the chat you want to hide.
   
3. Tap and hold.
   
4. You will see the “Hide Chat” icon at the top.
   
5. Tap it and your chat will be archived.

In case you want to display it, follow the steps below:

1. Open the GroupMe app and select the “Open Navigation” menu.
   
2. Open the “File” by tapping the box-shaped icon.
   
3. You’ll see your hidden chats here, so choose the one you want to show.
   
4. Select the chat and tap the chat avatar.
   
5. Select “Settings” and choose “Show chat” from the list.
   
   

iPhone and iPad

1. Launch GroupMe and find the chat you want to hide.
2. Swipe left on that chat and select the “Hide” icon.
3. You will no longer see this chat in your chat list.

To unhide a chat, follow these steps:

1. Select the “Open navigation” menu.
2. Choose “Archive.”
3. Find the chat you want to show in the “Hidden Chats” tab.
4. Tap “Show” next to it.

Note: Depending on the version of iOS you are running, you may not see the “Open Navigation” menu. In that case, select “Chat” at the top.

How to delete messages on GroupMe

Messages cannot be deleted from GroupMe chats. You can only hide them on your device. If you want to do that, follow the steps below.

1. When you open the desired chat, find the message you want to hide.
2. On a computer, right-click the message. On a mobile device, touch and hold.
3. Choose “Hide/Hide Message” from the menu.

If you want to show hidden messages again, follow these steps.

1. Open a chat and tap or click the chat avatar.
2. Click or tap “Settings.”
3. Choose the “Show hidden messages” option.

Please note that it may also display messages if you log out and log back into your account.

How to delete hidden chats in GroupMe

You can’t delete chats in GroupMe, whether they’re hidden or not. You can only end a chat if you are the owner. See the next section for instructions.

How to permanently delete chats in GroupMe

As mentioned, you can’t delete a chat in GroupMe.

However, you can choose to end your group. That will not only delete all the messages but will also delete the entire group. If you decide that’s what you want, follow the instructions below.

1. Launch GroupMe on your device.
2. Select the group chat you want to leave.
3. Click on the chat image.
4. Choose “Settings.”
5. At the bottom, you will find the “End Group” and “Leave Group” options. Choose one of the options and confirm.

If you simply leave a group, you can return. But once the group ends, you cannot undo this action.

Does deleting chat history on GroupMe delete it for everyone?

It is not like this. Clearing your chat history on GroupMe will only delete it on your device. Other members of the conversation will still be able to see the messages within the chat.
