For some reason, you have decided that you want to permanently delete your Amazon account. People can have a variety of different reasons for doing so, from moving to a country where Amazon doesn’t support shipping to issues with Amazon’s business practices, or even its controversial human resources policies.
With all the sensitive information your account contains, it’s probably a good idea to delete it if you no longer plan to use it. You don’t want anyone accessing your account and stealing sensitive information. Just make sure you understand exactly what the complete removal entails and that you are 100% sure that it is what you want to do in the future.
Once you’ve decided you want to cancel your Amazon account, follow the instructions below to do it as quickly and easily as possible.
What happens when you close your Amazon account?
If you successfully close your account, neither you nor anyone else will be able to access it. This includes Amazon employees and support staff. So if you close your account and then feel like you made a mistake, you’ll simply have to create a new one.
This isn’t just limited to your basic account either, where you purchase a few products during those amazing Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. Means all. A short list of things you will no longer be able to access once you lose your account:
- Other sites that used or required an Amazon account, such as Amazon Mechanical Turks, Amazon Associates, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Author Central, Kindle Direct Publishing, or Amazon Pay accounts.
- Digital content related to Amazon Music, Amazon Drive and/or Prime Photos, or your purchases on the Amazon Appstore. This includes Prime videos and Kindle purchases. All content will be deleted and will be unrecoverable.
- All reviews, discussion posts and customer images you have received or are responsible for.
- Your account history, which includes your credit card information, order history, etc.
- Returns or refunds not processed.
- Any remaining Amazon.com gift card or promotional credit balance currently in your account.
- Amazon devices, such as those enabled for Alexa, Echo, or Firestick TV, will not work without an Amazon account.
If you can live without everything mentioned above, then you are ready to begin the process of closing your Amazon account.
How do I permanently delete my Amazon account?
Closing your Amazon account is not as simple as most accounts on other websites. It’s not as simple as going to your account settings and clicking a button.
You’re not necessarily jumping through hoops, but closing an Amazon account requires a few more steps before it’s deleted and gives you peace of mind.
Step 1 – Cancel your open orders
If you recently placed any orders through your Amazon account, you’ll want to cancel them before deleting your account.
To do this, you’ll need to be on Amazon.com’s own website, of course. Once there, be sure to log in to the account you want to delete. You can do this by hovering over the Account and lists with the cursor and selecting Log in. Enter your account information and click Log in.

Once you are logged in to your current account, please ensure that there are no pending orders currently active in your account. If you wish, you can cancel any and all purchases that have not yet been shipped. You will not be able to close your account until this has been completed.
To cancel any order you may have, click Orders at the top right of the home page. Select Open ordersand once the orders are lifted, click Request a cancellationto the right of each order.

Step 2: Delete your Amazon account
You won’t find “Cancel/Deactivate Account” anywhere you look on the site. To finally start the process, you will need to scroll to the bottom of the page to the footer and click Aid in the “Let us help you” section.

Scroll down the page to “Search Help Topics” and select Do you need more help? at the bottom of the left column. This will display new options in the box on the right side. Click Contact Us.

On the next page, Amazon will ask you if you want to talk to its Chatbot. Unfortunately, in 2019, Amazon moved most of its help requests to its Chatbot, meaning you’ll have to cancel them by speaking to the bot.
Note: If you click the ‘We can call you’ link below the Start Chatting link, a live person will call you as soon as one is available.

From there, tell the bot that you want to close your account. It will then ask you to choose one of three options. From those options, choose the one related to ‘Login and security’. After that, it will ask you if you want to speak to a representative since the bot cannot help you with issues related to that.
Once you’ve spoken to a representative, you can let them know that you want to delete your Amazon account and they will start the process for you. The end result will still be an email that will provide you with an ETA for account deletion.
The time frame is usually between 12 and 48 hours, although some lucky people had their accounts deleted almost immediately.
Cancellation from the ‘Contact Us’ link
Using the ‘Contact Us’ The website looks a little different for cancellation because you don’t have the option to chat. You will have to send an email using this option.

Change the options to cancel your account and an email template will appear.

Users have reported that the process is incredibly simple and efficient. If you are concerned about your account remaining active after you have requested cancellation, you will receive a confirmation email within a couple of days.
Alternatives to canceling your account
If you’ve invested in Amazon book, music, and photo storage, you may not want to permanently delete your account. There are a few things you can do to keep your old Amazon account safe while you cancel Prime membership.

The first thing you can do to keep your account secure is to delete all of your credit card or PayPal account information. You can do this by:
- Accessing your Amazon account and going to the ‘My Account’ option
- On the left side of this page, click ‘Payment Methods’
- Tap the down arrows next to each payment option and click “Delete.”
- Tap ‘Confirm’
Doing this will bring up a pop-up window asking which card you want to designate as the default. Click ‘Cancel’ and it will allow you to continue deleting payment methods.
You can also delete any addresses associated with your account.
- Go to the ‘My Account’ page
- Click ‘Your address’
- Click ‘Delete’ next to each address
- Click “Yes” in the box that appears.
If you want to leave your Amazon account active for content you purchased, this is an alternative to prevent someone from accessing your personal information or ordering items without your consent.
Doing this leaves your account active without any payment or shipping information attached.
Protect your Amazon account
Lastly, you’ll want to make sure your email and phone number are up to date and that two-factor authentication is turned on. If you are concerned about leaving your account active for security reasons, you can take precautions to help with this.
- Access the ‘My Account’ page
- Click ‘Login and security’
- Enter your current password
- Click ‘Edit’ next to each option and enter updated information
Enabling 2FA (two-factor authentication) means others won’t be able to log into your account without text or email verification. If someone tries to log in, they will receive a notification in their email about the account access.

Signing up for Amazon Prime is easy. A little too easy.
