Google Docs is one of the best cloud software alternatives to desktop word processors. The cloud application allows you to compose documents that include tables, graphs, hyperlinks, YouTube videos, images, and more. Sure, it may still have fewer text formatting options and tools than MS Word, but Google Docs is getting better and better. However, one notable option is still missing from its images context menu. Where is the Save Image As option in Google Docs?
Unfortunately, Google Docs does not have a Save Image As option to download selected images every time you right click on them because you are in editing mode. Therefore you get Copy, Cut, Save to Keep, etc. Unfortunately, there is no way to select and download some images directly from a document. That option would certainly be a useful addition to the cloud app’s context menu. However, there are still some ways to download selected images from documents open in Google Docs.
Download images of documents by publishing them on the Web
Google Docs has a Publish on the web option that allows you to open a document in a browser tab. This feature allows you to download the images directly from the document page. Here’s how to do it.
- Click on File -> Share -> Publish to the webwhich opens the publishing menu.
- Click on the blue Post button.
- Select OK to confirm your shipment.
- Press Ctrl+C (Windows) or Command key (⌘) + V (Mac) on the highlighted link, then select Copy.
- Leave the post browser tab open and open a new tab. Paste the link and then press the button Enter/Return key. The newly published page loads. Don’t worry; no one has the link except you.
- Hover over the image you want to save. The right button of the mouse (Windows) or touch with two fingers (Mac) over the image and select Save Image As…
- Optional: You can unpublish the document when you are finished. Go back to the Google Doc tab where the publish option still appears. Click on Published content and settings, then select Stop posting.
Save images to Google Keep
Google Keep is a handy note-taking app now integrated with Google Docs. The feature allows you to open the “Keep Notes” sidebar. Plus, that also means you can save images from Google Docs directly to Keep and download them. Here’s how to do it.
- The right button of the mouse (Windows) or touch with two fingers (Mac) over the image you want to save, and then select See more actions -> Save to keep from the context menu.
- The right button of the mouse (Windows) or touch with two fingers (Mac) in the image in the “Keep Notes” sidebar and choose Save Image As.
Bulk download images from Google Docs using HTML format
If you need to download numerous images, it is probably best to download the document in HTML format. This option automatically saves images to a compressed folder. Extract the file and open the images subfolder that includes all the images.
- To download Google Doc as HTML, select File > Download -> Web page (.html, compressed).
- Click on the browser downloads iconand then choose to open the file location.
- Unzip the file, then browse and select the images file.
- Browse the images and delete the ones you don’t want.

You can install a Chrome browser plugin like Image extractor with Shift and click which downloads images from documents opened in Google Docs and other web pages.
Google Workspace Marketplace add-ons do not include any image grabbers for Docs.
