Typically, to stop a task and its processes, you need to open the Task Manager in Windows 11. But there is a new nifty way to stop a task from the taskbar itself. However, it is hidden under Developer Settings and disabled by default. When the setting is enabled, you can simply right-click on any app on the Windows 11 taskbar and end the task with a single click.
That said, you Unable to complete task for Windows Explorer (explorer.exe). To do this, you will still need to open Task Manager. It would have been nice if Microsoft had at least added a restart option for Windows Explorer to the taskbar. Nevertheless, follow the steps below to enable the ability to delete tasks from the Windows 11 taskbar.
- Open the Start menu and search for “Developer Settings” here. Click to open it.
- In developer settings, just enable the option “End Task” button to enable the option to end a process by right-clicking on the application in the taskbar. That’s all.
- With the feature enabled, right click on any active application in the taskbar to find the “End Task” option. Select “End Task” to stop the task immediately.
In my testing, it worked equally on the Release Preview channel (Windows 11 24H2) and the Stable channel (23H2).
