Discord is a free chat app used by gamers around the world. Since its launch in 2015, millions of gamers have come together to create communities around their favorite games, projects, and other ideas on the platform.
Because of the app’s focus on chat, players can use all kinds of formatting features like bold, italics, underline, and more integrated through Markdown. These additions help users express themselves better and ensure Discord remains a personality-based space.
However, one feature that users constantly look for in Discord is the ability to quote others. The work-oriented Discord alternative, Slack, has this feature, as do other chat apps. For a long time, Discord users had no luck quoting other users, having to resort to using code blocks or sophisticated chatbots.
Fortunately, this has changed in the last year! We’re happy to update this article with the good news that dating is now a built-in Discord feature. Is that how it works.
How to quote messages in discord
You can quote other Discord users on all platforms (iOS, Android, and desktop) using the same methods. We’ll focus on mobile Discord in this tutorial, although the citation techniques are essentially the same. Multi-line quotes are slightly different on desktop (it’s actually easier), but otherwise the process works exactly the same.
You can easily quote text in Discord by following these steps:
- Locate the message in question and copy it.

- Write the > symbol in the text box.

- Hit the space key. A line of text will appear.

- Now, paste the text you copied above.

- Send the message to the chat. Or click Shift + Enter and go back to @ someone.

One Line Quotes About Discord
Single line quotes in Discord are used when you want to quote something that only takes up one line of text. This means no line breaks; your fingers never touch theReturn button on your keyboard.
To quote on a single line, type the “>” symbol, followed by a space and your quote. This is what it should look like in the app:

Multi-Line Quotes About Discord
Multi-line citations are when you need to cite something that contains line breaks, such as a series of paragraphs. You can do this by simply writing “>” in front of each new paragraph you want to cite, although this could obviously get annoying after a while.
As a workaround, you can type “>>>” followed by a space at the beginning of your message so that everything you type in that message becomes part of the quote. The only way to get out of that date is to send the message and start a new one or go back “>>>”. It will look like this in the application:

You may remember that we said that multi-line quotes work a little differently on a desktop. This is because “>” and “>>>” use multi-line quotes by default. To convert it to a single line quote, pressReturn and thenRecoil to return to normal text.
And that is! That’s all there is to know about Discord dating right now.
Use code blocks to quote someone on Discord
You can also use the code block function to achieve a very similar effect. However, this method only works on PC.
Typically this is used to highlight code in a long list of lines, but since it’s so simple to do, it could also be used as a quote function. To do this, simply place the phrase you want to quote between two backtick “`” symbols.

Example: `The quote` (Type this without the spaces between the text and the backtick).

By doing this, the phrase will be inserted into a block of code. While this isn’t ideal for someone who wants a quote, the format is incredibly similar to one. You can also make multi-line text for text that spans a few different levels.
That said, while there is no traditional method for quoting, some Discord admins may install a bot that enables quotes and other features. This bot would need to be added to all channels it would be used on, but it’s worth the effort for those who want to quote others.
Frequent questions
For effective text communication, it is important to stylize certain words. Here are some other answers to your most frequently asked questions:
How do I address someone directly in a group chat?
When communicating with people in a Discord channel, you may need to direct a message to one person rather than the entire group. If you want to send a private message to a person, you can do so by tapping their username. But, if you want to send a message to that person within the channel, you can do that too.
Simply type @ before typing your username. A list will appear and you can select the contact from there or type the full name. When the message appears in the group chat, their name will be highlighted, indicating that the message is specifically for them.
Why don’t quotes work?
We see this all too often when users get frustrated because they try to manipulate text using single quotes. Most users think that the markdown simply does not work. In Discord markdowns, most of the time it is necessary to use a backtick symbol, which looks like a single quote, but is actually not the same thing.
This key can be found to the left of the 1 key on your keyboard. It accompanies the tilde key, which is also incredibly useful for Discord markdowns.
Can I use bots to help with quotes?
Yes absolutely. There are several bots available online that you can add to your Discord server and allow dating. As long as you are the owner or have administrative rights, you can add a bot to make it easier. Quote Robot is designed specifically for this feature, but one of the bots you already have may allow the feature.
Legendary customization
Fortunately, there are all kinds of ways to customize the Discord platform. Different themes are incorporated, with the ability to change font size, enlarge text, and more.
Those looking for additional customization can install BetterDiscord, a modified version of Discord that allows users to download custom themes and modify other aspects of the platform. Fortunately, Discord has an open API, so anyone can jump in and create their own versions of the social app.
The great thing about Discord is that users are only limited by their creativity. If someone knows how to code and can manipulate the existing language, they can do whatever they want with the platform. Additionally, most creators end up posting their creations online, available for free for anyone to try.
