Considered one of the most popular games ever created, Minecraft has seen many iterations since it released its alpha version in 2009. One popular feature that has seen many changes over the years is the ability to tame in-game animals, such as the ever popular fox.

If you’ve been thinking about getting one of these cute critters as a friend while you explore the world of Minecraft, read on and we’ll show you how.

How to tame a fox in Minecraft Java Edition

The original version of Minecraft, which has received the most updates, is now known as Java Edition. This version of the game runs on desktop computers, whether the system used is Windows, Linux or macOS. Foxes were introduced to the game with its 1.14 update.

If you want to tame foxes, you must follow these steps:

  1. First, if you want to tame a fox, you’ll need to know where it spawns. There are two types of foxes in the game, the snow fox with white fur and the red fox with red fur. The snow fox roams wild in snowy taiga biomes, while its red cousin can be found in taiga biomes or giant tree taiga.
If you are new to the game and unfamiliar with biome types, you will recognize the taigas for their abundance of spruce trees and mountainous terrain. Giant tree taigas are essentially the same except the trees are much larger than normal. The snowy taigas are its snowy version.

  2. Naturally spawned foxes will be wary of the player, so you will need taming items before proceeding. Foxes like sweet berries, and fortunately, they grow quite frequently in all taiga biomes. You can recognize a sweet berry bush by its telltale red markings. Collect everything you can because you will need them. Approximately 70 will be enough.

While you do so, we will collect other resources such as wood, earth or stone, with which we can build a wall. You’ll also need a leash, as foxes won’t automatically follow you like wolves do. To create a track, you will need four strings and a slime ball. Thread can be obtained from spiders, mosquitoes, cats or by breaking cobwebs. Slime balls can be obtained from slimes or sneezing baby pandas.
An advantage is created by combining items on the crafting grid. Place the slime ball in the center, then place the strings in positions 1, 2, 4, and 9. This combination will create two leads that you can use.
  3. Taming foxes requires you to find more than one. They appear in groups of two to four, so if you see one, chances are there’s another one out there too. Foxes are very skittish and will run away from players they spot. To get close to a fox you will have to sneak so it doesn’t run away.

Once you locate a group of at least two foxes, go into stealth mode and then approach them slowly. Try to find two foxes that are close together and then proceed to wall them up. Foxes can jump two blocks, so make sure your wall is at least two blocks high so they don’t escape. It’s easier to block one fox and then proceed to block the next one. You can then connect the walled areas and then slowly move them closer to each other while enclosing them. You will need them both to be close to each other for the next step.

  4. With the foxes now close to each other, he proceeds to feed them each a sweet berry. You will have to give it to the foxes one at a time. To feed a fox when on desktop, right-click on a fox while holding a sweet berry in your hand.

  5. If two foxes that are close to each other have sweet berries, they will proceed to reproduce. You’ll know this is happening when you see heart icons appear above their heads. After a few seconds, a baby fox will appear between them. This baby fox will trust the player completely, although it will follow the adult foxes.

  6. Feed the baby fox as many sweet berries as you can. This will speed up their growth a little. You will have to do this to stop them from following the adult foxes, who will still be quite afraid of you. Once you’ve fed the baby fox your sweet berries, wait a moment until it grows into its adult form.
  7. Once the baby fox transforms into an adult, take out the leash and use it on your newly tamed fox. Now you can take your new pet to your base or have it follow you as you explore the world. Alternatively, you can repeat the process and have a couple of tamed foxes, which you can now use to make more babies.

How to tame a fox in Minecraft Bedrock

Foxes have been in the Bedrock Edition of Minecraft since the beta, and they behave in much the same way as their Java Edition counterparts. If you have the Bedrock edition, the steps you need to follow to tame them are also similar. Refer to the instructions given above to tame a fox in Minecraft Bedrock.

How to tame a fox in Minecraft Education Edition

Minecraft Educational Edition is based on the Bedrock version, so they have quite similar steps. The only change is that players who do not have worldbuilding permissions may be limited in what they can do.

The steps given in the Java version of the game must be followed in the Educational Edition if you want to tame a fox. This would present a problem for players who have been locked in an area without a taiga biome or who have an unchanging world, as they cannot break blocks to collect resources. If the enemies are also off, then collecting threads and slime balls can be quite difficult.

Taming foxes in Education Edition is entirely possible by following the steps outlined above, but this requires the cooperation of the educator to gather the necessary materials.

How to tame a fox in Minecraft Mobile

Before consolidating into Bedrock, Minecraft Mobile was known as Pocket Edition and ran on Windows phones. Although the Pocket Edition technically still exists, as it was also the basis for the Windows 10 version, for the most part it is simply Bedrock Edition with a different name.

All the steps required to tame foxes, as detailed in the Java version, are the same for the mobile application. The only real difference is that instead of right clicking when feeding berries, you tap the fox. Also, the stealth button is the diamond in the center of the motion controls, at the bottom left of the screen.

The iOS version of Minecraft is also based on Bedrock Edition. As such, all the steps to tame foxes, as already detailed above, also apply to iOS.

As with the iOS version, the Android version of Minecraft shares the same features. Please refer to the Java version steps for taming foxes as they are also the same.

How to tame a fox in Minecraft creative mode

Creative mode is a game mode in Minecraft that allows players to access all blocks, gives you the ability to fly, and disables deaths and mobs in the game. This actually makes it easier to tame foxes, as you have access to sweet berries and leads without having to hunt or craft them.

All the steps are pretty much the same, except you can skip the part about collecting resources. Simply find some foxes, corner them, and then proceed to feed them sweet berries from your inventory.

How to get a loyal fox in Minecraft

Baby foxes that are the result of you raising two wild adults will always be loyal to you and attack enemies that hurt you. However, remember that as long as they are in baby form, they will follow their parents and if they somehow escape, the baby will go with them. She feeds the baby fox lots of sweet berries to speed up its growth.

Additional FAQs

Do tamed foxes follow you in Minecraft?

No. Unlike tamed wolves, tamed foxes will not follow you unless you have food in your hand. If you want to bring a tamed fox to your base, put a leash on it or bring a sweet berry with you to make it follow you.

How do foxes behave in Minecraft?

Foxes are passive and will not attack players directly. They will run away from any player who is not sneaking, so you will have to be careful if you want to approach one. They are active at night and will attack rabbits, chickens, fish and baby turtles. If they are near a village, they will attack it at night, harassing the tame chickens in the area.

What can you do with a fox in Minecraft?

In addition to having a cute pet, fox breeding does count in the trailer ‘The Parrots and the Bats’ and ‘Two by Two’. They also have the ability to drop feathers, leather, wheat, eggs, rabbit skins, rabbit feet, or emeralds. However, there are better and more convenient sources for these materials.

A new level of enjoyment

Pets add another level of fun to the already rich gameplay that Minecraft offers. Taming foxes may not be easy, but having a cute pet around makes the effort worth it. Do you know other ways to tame a fox in Minecraft? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
