The Apple Watch is one of those technological devices with multiple uses and benefits, especially for health and fitness. This lightweight accessory is a fantastic tool for those trying to monitor their fitness and activity.
Fortunately, the Apple Watch can help you reach your goals in several ways, including serving as a handy calorie counter.
So what’s the best way to get an idea of how many calories you should consume in a day? There’s really no easy answer to that question, because many factors influence your personal calorie needs.
If you have a apple watchYou can pair your iPhone to check your stats, which can be more accurate as it tracks your actual activity levels rather than relying on estimates you input into a TDEE calculator.
The Apple Watch and iPhone have become a very popular calorie counting combo because you can track calories in and calories out with the same device you wear every day and use for many other apps. This means there is no additional investment of anything other than the time it takes to take a quick look at your device!
So, without further ado, let’s get started!
How to read the Apple Watch calorie tracker
Your Apple Watch can help you track your health by tracking things like your heart rate, physical activity, and, of course, your calories.
Once you’ve worn your Apple Watch all day, you can access your daily stats from the Health app on your iPhone (pre-iOS 14) or the Fitness app (post-iOS 14).
If you’re using an updated version of iOS and watchOS, follow these steps:
Open the Fitness app on your iPhone.

Tap the ‘Move’ category to explore calorie-based information

If you’re using an older version of iOS and watchOS, follow these steps:
Open the Health app on your iPhone
On the iPhone that’s paired with your Apple Watch, open the Fitness app on your iPhone. Make sure you have all your stats loaded. Otherwise, tap the profile icon in the top right corner and update your information.

Play the Today tab if you’re not there already.

Visualize your active and resting energy
Check the numbers for Active Energy (the calories you burned while exercising) and Resting energy (the calories you have burned at rest). If you add them up, you’ll get a good estimate of the total number of calories you burn each day.
If you want a more complete explanation of what Apple means by “Sleep” or “Active,” the Health app will show you a description if you tap either of those categories.
So, for example, if I were as active every day as I was on October 25, my Apple Watch thinks I could consume almost 2,600 calories per day and still maintain my weight. Of course, if you want to be even more precise with these numbers, you can add up a week’s worth and pide it by seven to get an average of your performance over the course of the week.

Finally, it’s important to know that your Apple Watch uses the age, height, weight, and gender information you provided to calculate these numbers. If your personal information is inaccurate, then your Apple Watch will not be able to accurately calculate any of this data.
Setting that information on the iPhone is important, but the Apple Watch can monitor that information directly. To make sure the information is correct or to change it as your weight or age changes, follow these instructions:
Launch the Apple Watch app on your iPhone
TapMy watch

Then tapHealth

Tap on “Health profile” and then “Edit.”
Calorie Tracking: Watch Face
If you want to easily analyze your calorie data using your Apple Watch, you can use one of the many faces that display this information. Simply open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone and follow these steps:
Tap the watch face you like

Activate the activity options you want to display

Tap “Set as current watch face.”

Now, all you have to do is tap the Activity icon on your watch face to see your Calorie data.
How does the Apple Watch track calories?
One of the most important things to check is that the Wrist Detection setting on your Apple Watch is turned on. This helps your Apple Watch determine if you’re moving, how much you’re moving, and then calculate your calorie burn.
To verify that Wrist Detection is turned on, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. Tap “My Watch,” and then tap “Passcode.” Make sure Wrist Detection is turned on.

Next, make sure your watch is set sufficiently. You’ll want the heart rate sensor to be snug against your skin, but of course, make sure you have sensation in all of your fingers! Make sure you don’t put your watch into power saving mode during your workout, or that will disable the heart rate monitor feature.
You’ll also want to calibrate your Apple Watch. To do this, take it and your iPhone outside on a nice, clear day. It is important to have an excellent GPS signal during the calibration process.
Open the Training app and choose “Outdoor Walk” as the activity. Then you will walk at your usual pace for 20 minutes. This exercise will help your Apple Watch understand your pace, acceleration, stride and thus refine the calculations of your calorie burning.
Apple Activity Tracker
Your Apple Watch has an activity tracker ready and available. If you’re really trying to track your calories throughout the day, you can set your watch face to show:
- How many calories have you burned?
- How many minutes of activity have you done (workouts)
- Standing every hour
Helpful reminders and brilliant rewards for completing one of the activities mentioned above are great for keeping you on track and motivating you.
Does the Apple Watch have a food tracker?
The short answer is: you can, but you’ll need to get an app for it. There are many apps available today that coordinate not only with the iPhone, but can also be paired with your Apple Watch. Applications like My FitnessPal either Lose it! Allow users to monitor general daily statistics, such as calories, nutrients, and more. Both also have a “quick add” feature that allows you to quickly add a meal or snack.
MyFitnessPal to count calories
UnderArmour developed MyFitnessPal for those who want to track their fitness and stay motivated. With several apps available, the MyFitnessPal app allows you to enter the calories you’ve consumed throughout the day.
Set up the app on your iPhone and then visit the Watch app on the same device. Scroll to the bottom of this app and make sure MyFitnessPal is installed on your watch.
Once your account is set up and the app is active on your Apple Watch, the app will pull health data directly. There’s no need to enter your workouts or calories into the app because your watch does it for you.
If you need to add a meal or snack you ate, simply navigate to your app drawer and search for MyFitnessPal. Swipe until you see the option to add food or drink.
As a free app that can be downloaded from the App Store, this simple addition to your Apple Watch makes counting calories easy.
Can I use an Apple Watch without an iPhone?
Unfortunately not. An iPhone is required to at least set it up. If you have an older iPhone that still connects to Wi-Fi, then yes, you can use it to set up and maintain your Apple Watch. u003cbru003eu003cbru003eHowever, if you have the newer Apple Watch Series 6, you can use a friend or family member’s iPhone to set up your watch, meaning you don’t need to have an iPhone to enjoy the benefits of the Apple Watch.
How accurate is the Apple Watch calorie counter?
Compared to other wearable calorie counting devices on the market, Apple seems to do a great job in the accuracy department. The watch measures your heart rate and also preset workout options. For example, if you tell your watch that you’re rowing a boat, it will understand what normal rowing activities burn and then take into account your heart rate to provide a calorie count.
Your Apple Watch can’t determine what you’ve eaten just by wearing it (yet!), but by entering details about what you’ve eaten, the app will keep track of everything, allowing you to access the details quickly from your Apple Watch or iPhone.
