Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James gave a nod to one of his favorite rappers, Jay-Z, while answering a question about where his drive comes from this late into his career.
James is in the midst of his record-setting 23rd season in the league, and he still approaches the game with a clear purpose and passion.
“I would never disrespect the basketball gods,” James said. “I understand that it’s a real thing, and I would never disrespect the game when it comes to playing it. So I put the time, the effort and the commitment into it — mentally, physically, spiritually — every time I step on the floor, every time I’m at practice, whatever the case may be.”

James capped his comments with a quote from the Brooklyn-based rapper.
“As Jay-Z would say, if you can’t respect that, your whole perspective is whack,” James said. “Maybe you’ll love me when I fade to black.”

By using this quote, James sent a direct shot at his doubters while teasing his eventual retirement.
The quote is from Jay-Z’s song “December 4th” off of The Black Album, which was originally released and marketed as a retirement album from the legendary emcee, though he would ultimately return from retirement and make more music.
With the line, Jay-Z was basically saying that his greatness was being taken for granted, and that his upcoming absence would help people appreciate how great he truly was. Clearly James can relate to that feeling at this point in his career.
Despite his sustained greatness, both on and off the court, James has an ocean of detractors who would rather nitpick ways that he isn’t as good as one legend or another, as opposed to simply appreciating his unique, once-in-a-lifetime greatness.
It remains to be seen if James will retire after the current campaign, or if he’ll stick around for another year or two. But either way, that day is coming, and when it does, the basketball world will absolutely miss The King.
