Messi played every minute of the 2-2 draw with NYCFC, assisting the last-gasp equalizer, and then scored in the midweek CONCACAF Champions League second leg. With the game well in hand through the second half, Messi was withdrawn with a half-hour remaining, allowing him to rest for the weekend road trip.
At some point Mascherano will be wary of running his all-time great superstar into the ground early in the season, which Gerardo Martino was guilty of last year, but the time for caution is not now. He will be expected to start in Houston.
