Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold faces a key decision over his future at the club in the coming months.

The England international is in the final year of his contract at Anfield and team-mates Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are also coming to the end of their current deals next summer.

The club have opened talks with their playmaking defender but Arne Slot is yet to offer an update on progress as speculation mounts over his next move.

The 25-year-old is eligible to speak to non-English clubs from early 2025 as his contract enters its final six months, should he opt to leave the Premier League.

Real Madrid are rumoured to be monitoring Alexander-Arnold and Los Blancos are eyeing him as a potential long-term successor to Dani Carvajal.

However, despite Madrid’s rumoured interest, former Reds star Jamie Carragher has sounded a note of caution about replacing the experienced Carvajal in the Spanish capital.

“The question is: ‘What do you want for the rest of your life?’ Does Trent want to stay here for the rest of his career or does he want to go and try something else?” Carragher told Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool’s home clash with Brentford.

“And if he does, when Real Madrid call him, it will be very difficult for any player. I fully understand the dilemma he is in. He is in the ideal position as a footballer, he is 25 years old, he has one year left on his contract, he can wait until Christmas.

“I’m sure there will be dialogue with other clubs already, let’s be honest, that’s how it works. It will be interesting to see how it develops.”

“I think Carvajal would have something to say about that though, as people are talking about Trent. He’s only won the European Cup six times and the Euros in the summer, so I don’t think he’d be too happy about that.”

Even at 32, Carvajal remains vital to Real Madrid, with five La Liga titles to go along with those six domestic European crowns, but his contract with Madrid also expires in 2025.
