Will Ferrell fans looking for an emotionally charged documentary are in luck, as the comedian’s latest outing is already garnering widespread critical acclaim.
Will & Harper may have only just received its first trailer on Netflix, but the upcoming documentary has already made waves. It was already enthusiastically received at the Sundance Film Festival and is now set to debut on Netflix.
The documentary follows Will Ferrell and his longtime friend and writer, Harper Steele, as they go on a road trip. However, it is important because it is also the story of Steele’s coming out.
Steele is a longtime writer, having worked on children’s classics like Doug and Welcome Freshman, as well as lesser-known projects like The Spoils of Babylon and A Deadly Adoption. Steele has also been a writer for Ferrell since she began working on Saturday Night Live in 1995, where the two quickly became good friends.
During the global lockdown, Steele revealed to Ferrell that she was a transgender woman. The new documentary chronicles how the two women reunited after Steele transitioned and went on a road trip, during which Ferrell and Steele visited various industry friends to introduce her to the community.
So far, the film is receiving rave reviews. As of this writing, the music on Rotten Tomatoes is at a 100% perfect Tomatometer after 21 reviews.
Critics praise Will & Harper for its honest approach to the subject matter, with reviews calling it “moving, funny, and charged with a sense of vulnerability” and “emotionally impactful.”
The documentary is the latest in a busy year for Ferrell, who also appeared in The Boys and lent his voice to Despicable Me 4.
