The Detroit Lions had a tough test to start their 2024 campaign and managed to pass it with a 26-20 victory over the The Los Angeles Rams at Ford Field on Sunday night.
The Lions are likely to win, but it certainly wasn’t a pretty sight, mainly because of the lackluster performance of quarterback Jared Goff, who struggled mightily. Goff completed 18 of 28 passes for 217 yards and a touchdown on one interception, but he could have been intercepted at least two more times.
Luckily for Goff, receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown made a great play to break up a pass before a Rams defender could catch it, and Los Angeles cornerback Cobie Durant dropped another potential interception later in the game.
Heading into Week 2, the Lions sit third in the NFL power rankings. Jugo Mobile”Vinnie Iyer, that’s where they were ahead in Week 1. Detroit is trailing The Kansas City Chiefs (No. 1) and the San Francisco 49ers (No. 2), which is exactly where they should be. However, it is possible that the Lions could move up one spot if San Francisco loses to the New York Jets Monday evening.
Here are Iyer’s thoughts on Detroit after their win over the Rams.
“The Lions almost had a carbon copy of the tough test against the Rams at home as they did in the playoffs, but they once again dug deep and showed they can be resilient offensively and defensively – and work overtime if necessary – under Dan Campbell,” he wrote.
On the positive side, the Lions saw third-year wide receiver Jameson Williams have a breakout game, throwing for a career-high 121 receiving yards. Running back David Montgomery was excellent when the Lions remembered he was available, and the defense held firm to help the Lions take the lead.
The Lions will return to action when they host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2. Hopefully we’ll see a better performance from Goff in this contest.
