Last week, the New England Patriots announced that veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett beat out first-round pick Drake Maye for the team’s starting job in 2024.
The move gives Maye more time to adjust to life in the NFL, the playbook and game-day operations.
However, Maye might not be on the bench for long, as during Mayo’s media availability on Monday, he made it clear that if Brissett were to get injured, as happened in the final preseason game, the rookie would take over.
“For me, for any starting quarterback, or a starting quarterback in general, it’s tough to come into this league and play at a high level. Listen, when you talk about developing a guy like Drake Maye, it’s an ongoing process,” Mayo said. “If Jacoby were to get hurt in Week 1, Drake would 1,000 percent be the next guy to come in as the No. 2 quarterback.”
It’s interesting that New England would be confident in starting Maye in Week 1 due to injury, but they aren’t confident enough to start him regardless. That would speak to their confidence in Brissett and also to where Maye is in his development.
If they weren’t comfortable with Maye coming in, they likely would have signed another veteran to their roster or practice squad to step in if needed.
