The 2022 prequel to West’s pornographic slasherunknown,PearlThe film brings back star Mia Goth to tell her origin story as a villain. The plot is set in 1918, during the Spanish flu pandemic and World War I. Pearl (Goth, this time without the old lady makeup) is trapped on an isolated farm with her family, caring for her ailing father and dealing with her overbearing mother. Pearl dreams of a life of Hollywood glamour and is eventually pushed to the edge.
Earlier this year, the third film in the series was released, MaXXXinawas released in theaters. Although it was highly appreciated, many critics agreed that it lacked the “X factor” of unknown and Pearl. Because Pearl It’s a prequel, you can also watch the movie as a standalone film. Pearl Plot summary of the movie:
The year is 1918 and Pearl (played by Mia Goth) is the daughter of German immigrants. She lives in Texas with her nagging mother, Ruth (Tandi Wright), whom she helps tend to on their failing farm and cares for her father (Matthew Sunderland), who is in a near-coma and has fallen ill with the Spanish flu. Pearl’s husband, Howard, is away fighting in World War I. Pearl dreams of one day becoming a famous dancer and leaving this tedious life of farming and caregiving behind. Pearl also has a dark side: she gleefully murders a goose in cold blood for disrupting one of her performances in the animal pen.
One day, Pearl’s sister-in-law Mitsy (Emma Jenkins-Purro) stops by the church to tell Pearl that she’s auditioning for a traveling dance group. Pearl decides that this audition will be her ticket out of her sad life. But when she tells her mother about the audition, her mother tells her that she’s going to fail. She tells her to be realistic and accept the life she has, not to dream about the life she wants. She tells Pearl that she knows there’s darkness in her, that she knows Pearl wants her father and mother dead, and that everyone will see that and be afraid of her. This argument escalates into a physical fight, and the mother’s dress accidentally catches fire in the fireplace. The mother is burned alive and is on the verge of death, but not quite dead. Pearl locks her mother in the basement and runs off to sleep with the charming movie projectionist (David Corenswet) she meets in town.
The projectionist brings Pearl to her house the next morning. She invites him in for more sex, and he realizes the atmosphere isn’t right. Pearl gets angry when he tries to leave and murders him with a pitchfork. She dumps his body in the alligator-infested lake and goes to her audition. Pearl dances like crazy, but the judges tell her they’re looking for someone “younger and blonder.” Mitsy drives Pearl home, distraught, and gently coaxes her sister-in-law to speak her mind. She tells Pearl to pretend she’s talking to Howard. Pearl confesses everything to “Howard” – her infidelity, her murderous tendencies, and her dark jealousy of Howard’s family life. She says she was outraged that Howard left her alone on the farm. But now she regrets what she’s done and says she’ll do whatever it takes to make the farm a home and make Howard love her.
Mitsy is terrified, obviously. She tries to leave, but Pearl forces her to confess that she won the audition. It’s unclear if she actually won or if she’s just trying to keep Pearl quiet. Either way, it’s not enough. When Mitsy leaves the house, Pearl chases her with an axe and brutally murders Mitsy. Mitsy pleads for her life, stating that she’ll do whatever Pearl wants. Pearl responds by quoting her mother: It’s not about what she wants, it’s about making the most of what she has.
Pearl (2022) Ending explained:
After murdering Mitsy, Pearl dismembers the body and feeds it to the alligator in the lake. She then goes down to the basement to visit her mother, dead and burned. She lies next to her mother’s corpse and imagines her singing to her in German. She then drags the body upstairs and recreates a macabre version of a happy family life. She props the bodies of her mother and father on the dining room table and prepares a rotten, maggot-covered meal. Why does Pearl do this?
Well, first of all, it’s clear that she’s lost her mind a bit. (If you recall, Mitsy made an earlier comment about the pandemic and isolation driving people crazy. This hit even harder when the movie was released in 2022, still at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.) Secondly, Pearl mentioned to Mitsy in her big confession that she would try to create a home for Howard, so that he would love her. Presumably, this is her sick way of trying to do so.
In the final scene of the film, Howard returns home from the war. He enters the farm house and sees the rotting corpses and rotting food on the table. The mold on the food suggests that weeks have passed since Pearl staged that horrific scene. Pearl greets Howard while holding a pitcher of lemonade. “I’m so glad you’re home,” she says, before offering him a pained smile. Goth maintains that pained smile for several minutes, as the film’s credits roll and the film ends.
Why does Howard stay with Pearl in the… Pearl end?
Although Howard looks horrified in this final scene, we know from… unknown that Howard stays with Pearl on that farm for many, many more years. West leaves it up to you to fill in the blanks. Does Howard stay out of fear for his own life? Does he love Pearl that much? Or is he also a murder-hungry madman? After all, he did tell Pearl in his letter that he witnessed horrible atrocities during the war. Maybe he’s become desensitized to murder, or even loves it as much as Pearl does.
Whatever the reason, when we meet Pearl and Howard again in unknownThey have been married for a long time and living in the country house. I guess you could say they lived happily ever after.
