Tottenham survived a midweek Carabao Cup shock thanks to Brennan Johnson’s added-time winner to earn a 2-1 victory over EFL Championship side Coventry City.
Spurs were seconds away from third-round elimination before Djed Spence’s equaliser and Johnson’s decisive goal capped a wild finale.
Ange Postecoglu has had a mixed start to the season despite his confident promise of winning a trophy in his second season in charge, with just one Premier League win so far.
A cup run would be a boost for Spurs, and Johnson’s goal booked them a place in the next phase, his first goal of the season.
The Wales international was signed by Postecoglu from Nottingham Forest last summer to add pace and goals to Spurs’ attack, but he has managed just 35 EPL goals in 2023/24.
The 23-year-old will be hoping to continue his progress after the confidence boost of a winning goal and Postecoglu is full of belief.
“With Brennan, it’s important that he comes in, works hard on his game and when you’re an attacking player you’re always kind of measured against certain things,” he said.
“If he can get through this period and be positive and play the way he knows how to play, he can make a significant contribution, and credit goes to him. He scored a great goal.”
Tottenham return to Premier League action on September 21 at home to rivals Brentford, with Johnson targeted to start.
