The Houston Rockets have one of the brightest futures of any team in the NBA.
The Western Conference’s No. 2 seed may have lost in the first round of the playoffs last year, but they are stacked with young talent across the board in Alperen Şengün, Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith Jr., and Reed Sheppard. They were able to acquire two-time NBA champion Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns this Summer as well, showing just how serious they are about building a contender while also developing their young core.
But the current question with Durant is his contract situation. As of now, he is set to become a free agent in the Summer of 2026, and Houston can’t afford to lose their latest acquisition and go into the season without an extension done.
Rockets Must Sign Kevin Durant to a Contract Extension
A recent report from Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald indicated that the Miami Heat, a team rumored to be in on the Durant sweepstakes when Phoenix was shopping him, would be interested in signing the former MVP if he hits free agency next Summer.
This would be bad news for Houston, who just gave up one of their young ascending players, Jalen Green, to acquire him. To avoid disaster, the Rockets should certainly sign Durant to the two-year $122 million extension he is eligible for.
Sports Illustrated’s Jed Katz urged Houston to do the right thing and nip this in the bud before it causes any problems ahead of what should be a promising season in Houston.
“If Durant and the Rockets don’t reach an extension and he becomes set to enter free agency, the narrative will also loom over everyone’s head throughout the season. Any time Houston reaches a bump in the road during the regular season, conversations will erupt regarding free agency. The relieving part is that the Rockets can make it all go away. They just need to reach an agreement.” Wrote Katz.
The Rockets have until October 21st to re-sign Durant; otherwise, he will spend the rest of the season wondering where his future lies.
