shÅ gun Episode 6, “Ladies of the Willow World,” takes on one of the most exquisitely erotic moments in the book, when Mariko (Anna Sawai) accompanies Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) to visit the courtesan Kiku (Yuka Kouri), and finds a way to make it even more tense and devastating thanks to a clever camera trick. The romantic tension of the scene is summed up by longing and further cements how very good the “Ladies of the Willow World” are at reading the secret hearts of their clients…

Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) finds himself doubly indebted to Blackthorne after the events of last week. shÅ pistol. To thank Anjin for saving him and offering him his swords as a gift, Toranaga not only elevates the English navigator to the rank of admiral, but also buys a night with Izu’s most famous sex worker, Kiku, at Gin’s teahouse ( Yuko Miyamota). Teahouses, Mariko explains, are brothels unique to feudal Japan, and Gin’s teahouse is especially famous for the elegant artistry of its ladies. Mariko also explains to Blackthorne that it is a great honor for him to spend a night with Kiku. However, Blackthorne, who is madly in love with Mariko, seems not to be very impressed with this arrangement.
“It’s a pretty sad scene. In some ways, I don’t think Blackthorne ever wanted to go there.” shÅ pistol star Cosmo Jarvis told Jugo Mobile during an interview at Winter 2024 TCA. “But obviously within this culture, the way it’s presented, there are so many obligations, there was no way to say no.”
In fact, Mariko continues to pressure Blackthorne to accept the privilege as an honor for what it is. Further complicating the situation is the implication that Gin has discovered for herself that Mariko and Blackthorne are forbidden lovers. It is repeatedly implied that the teahouse will offer Mariko and Blackthorne a secret place to embark on a date. Kiku even goes so far as to invite Mariko to join her and Blackthorne in private. As dazzling as “Willow World” is, the dream world of sex work designed not to entertain embarrassed clients but to offer them refuge, Mariko never loses sight of her duties. Even if she comes closer.
In a beautiful sequence, Kiku asks Mariko if she can translate for him. The courtesan wants to explain to Blackthorne what Willow World is. To do this, Kiku deliberately sits at an angle behind Mariko, so that Blackthorne only sees her lover. The camera achieves this with a carefully choreographed movement that blocks Kiku completely. In the course of Kiku’s explanation, Mariko changes pronouns from “she” to “I,” leaning toward clever seduction. Through Kiku’s words, she lets Mariko voice out loud the desire she feels for Blackthorne. Although Mariko cannot physically be with him, they can both get caught up in the fantasy that Kiku can be a proxy for Mariko later that night. (In fact, Mariko insists on precisely this in the book.)
Like the way Kiku elegantly pours Blackthorne’s sake, it’s a moment of subtle technical skill that took a lot of work on set to achieve. shÅ pistol The vision of life from co-creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks.
“Well, in terms of the logistics of the technical side, it was a lovely work environment because there were so many professionals with the Canadian crew and the Japanese crew who were so technically proficient it was crazy to witness,” Jarvis said.
“I just trusted the director, Hiromi. [Kamata]and Rachel and Justin’s vision of that scene because they came to me several times to explain how they wanted to film it and I didn’t have to turn around.” shÅ pistol Star Anna Sawai told Jugo Mobile during the Winter 2024 TCA: “I was just doing what was written in the script.”
“So I focused on the more emotional side, on what she’s going through,” Sawai continued. “And she doesn’t show herself much. I’m not trying to show that [passion], but I think it comes from Kiku’s words and the way they filmed it. Very intimate.”
Jarvis said: “And it’s a strange situation to be in a situation where, you know, almost everything is said, everything is on the table between the two of them, and yet it’s just not said. And I guess that’s why it’s an interesting scene.”
While what we see on FX shÅ gun It’s not exactly the way the scene plays out in James Clavell’s original novel, it’s true to the spirit of Blackthorne’s visit to the teahouse. Mariko accompanies him, Kiku attempts to offer cover for the lovers, but ultimately replaces the married Mariko for Blackthorne’s night of purchased passion at Willow World.
