The Pittsburgh Steelers are running out of time to add Aaron Rodgers to the roster. The free-agent quarterback has been linked to Pittsburgh since the first day of free agency back in March but has yet to sign with the team and is also considering retirement.
Though many assumed that Rodgers would eventually sign with the Steelers, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero cast doubt on that assumption during a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, stating that Rodgers hasn’t told Pittsburgh that he is coming.
“I have been told that he has not affirmatively told the Steelers that he’s coming,” Pelissero said. “There’s all these signs that he’s coming, but he has not affirmatively said ‘Hey, June 9th book me the ticket. I’m coming in and I’m going to join this team.’ That has not happened as of this point.”
With the Rodgers’ situation still up in the air, SportsGrid’s Grant White predicts the Steelers will sign quarterback Tyler Huntley, who last played for the Miami Dolphins in 2024.
Huntley has been a backup for all of his career but has started a handful of games since entering the league in 2020. The 27-year-old has posted a 5-9 record in 14 starts, tossing 11 touchdowns to ten interceptions with five rushing touchdowns.
Signing Huntley to compete for the backup role with Mason Rudolph and Will Howard would be a savvy move from general manager Omar Khan. However, the former Baltimore Raven isn’t capable of being a full-time starting quarterback, so adding him wouldn’t solve all of Pittsburgh’s problems at the sport’s most vital position.
Landing Rodgers is the ideal scenario for the Steelers, but in the meantime, signing Huntley to give Rudolph and Howard some competition would be an understandable move. The 2022 Pro Bowler can’t be the starting quarterback when Pittsburgh opens the season in New York versus the Jets, though.
