After atlanta ended, did anyone expect Donald Glover’s follow-up to that groundbreaking series to be a complete remake of a Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie action comedy? But this new vision Mr and Mrs Smith It’s likely to make you forget the 2005 film entirely, and in a good way.
MISTER. & LADY. BLACKSMITH: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?
Initial shot: A gentle wind causes wind chimes on a porch to make music. A woman (Eiza González) and a man (Alexander Skarsgård), hiding from whoever it is, decide to stay and fight when a car speeds towards their house. Of course, neither of them succeeds.
The essence: We see a man and a woman enter a room and look at a large screen. They are asked for their nail clippings and then the screen writes questions for them to answer, such as questions about their history in the military and law enforcement. As we watch Jane Smith (Maya Erskine) and John Smith (Donald Glover) enter and walk through their luxurious new home in New York, we hear Jane say that she didn’t make it to the CIA because of “antisocial tendencies” and John say that the Whether his military discharge was dishonorable was a matter of opinion.
Of course, Jane and John Smith are their new names, and despite being a legally married couple, they meet for the first time when they enter that house. They get all their identification, including a marriage license, and meet a cat that John assumes comes with the house. They sleep in separate rooms the first night, and John takes pictures of a plant Jane has and claims that he has an app that can tell him if he needs watering. What he’s really doing is taking a photo of her to see if Google’s facial recognition discovers anything about her. However, he doesn’t discover anything.
Your first mission is to go to a cafe near Chinatown and follow a woman until you receive a package; They need to intercept the package and deliver it to the coordinates provided to them. .
While they keep an eye on the woman and try to figure out what the package was, John tries to get information about Jane, including mundane information about whether she’s been to New York before. She is reluctant to say anything, but reveals that she was there on a school trip but ditched it “to eat pancakes with a pedophile.” Before she can explain, the woman moves.
As they continue to follow her, John continues to get information from Jane, who doesn’t give much away. But the story of breakfast with the pedophile does connect them, and she is willing to tell that story while she watches the woman watching a play. We also get more scenes from their final interview, where they are both asked if they are willing to give up their current lives.
They follow the woman through a Chinatown market where she receives the package, and John devises a way to get the package that feels subtle. However, after delivering it, they get a big surprise and realize that the first mission was much riskier than they thought.

What shows will it remind you of? Of course, Mr and Mrs Smith is a remake of the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angeline Jolie. But this plot is completely different from the plot of the movie; Here, John and Jane do not know each other before working together, unlike in the film, John and Jane are a married couple of assassins assigned by their respective bosses to kill each other. Created by Glover and Francesca Sloane, the understated style is reminiscent of Glover’s previous series. atlantain which Sloane was a producer.
Our opinion: Glover’s Favorite atlanta Director Hiro Murai directed the first episode of Mr and Mrs Smith, and that sense of understated calm interspersed with high tension carries over to this more action-oriented series. But that is not the only aspect of Mr and Mrs Smith That makes the show so appealing.
What we’re seeing in this version is John and Jane building their relationship and trusting each other from nothing, and as they progress through the missions of each episode, we’ll see their feelings steadily grow. For some reason, seeing the relationship from its earliest moments, when they are together in such an artificial way, has the potential to be extremely satisfying.
It wouldn’t work if the chemistry between Glover and Erskine didn’t work. But even in the Smiths’ couple’s early moments, we can see them clicking, mainly because Glover and Erskine are working on similar comedic wavelengths. Both are known for being dry, even melancholic in their previous roles, and the fact that they play people whose previous lives are so tense and mysterious only adds to their wise and weary demeanor.
But what we also liked about this interpretation of Jane and Jon is that they won’t take on this new job as a pair of superspies with no apparent flaws. They have many defects and weaknesses; It turns out that Jane brought her cat home and she likes to watch Naked and scared. John assumes that the handsome man his target is meeting is not her boyfriend, and Jane calls him out when he’s wrong.
It’s these little quirks, and stories like the one Jane tells about her encounter with the pedophile as a teenager, that will bring the Smiths together despite lingering feelings of distrust due to the fact that, well, they’ve lived entire lives that they remain silent. But each case will also bring them together, as we see at the end of the first episode, when the case’s unexpected turn shows how well they will need to work together to succeed and stay alive.

Sex and skin: Nothing in the first episode, but who knows what we’ll see as the show progresses?
Parting Shot: After John drops Jane off in the master bedroom, she falls asleep as we flash back to the final interview in front of that screen. “Wow, then, a whole new life,” says Jane. “Mmm. I’m fine with that.”
Sleeping star: There will be a ton of interesting guest stars during the show’s first season, including Parker Posey, John Turturro, Dave Attell, Sharon Horgan, Michaela Coel, Ron Perlman, and more. We’ve already seen what Glover and Sloane are willing to do with guest stars with Skarsgård’s brief appearance, so it will be interesting to see what they do with these other big names.
Most pilot line: The pedophile Jane and her friend met when they were teenagers and called himself “Buddy Love”, like in the Eddie Murphy version of The crazy professor. For some reason, the nickname should have been creepier.
Our call: TRANSMIT IT. This new vision Mr and Mrs Smith It’s fun and full of surprises, with great chemistry between Glover and Erskine that can lead to some interesting sexual tension as the series progresses.
