Has anyone ever admitted that they enjoy weeding? It is a task that must be done if you want to have a successful garden where your plants are not deprived of vital water and nutrients. Weeds have a sneaky habit of invading even the tidiest of outdoor spaces, so they keep showing up no matter how much you stay on top of the task.
Weeding is backbreaking work, made even more complicated by the difficulty of removing all the weeds – and the roots altogether! So even if you have spent time fighting weeds, they are often prone to growing back.
This is where my innovative garden tool comes into play.
I have been using Burgon & Ball’s dandelion weeding tool since last fall and it has been a game changer. It’s not just another tool in my shed, it’s become one of my favorites. With its reliable and sturdy design, it eliminates the hassle of weeding, making the task much more manageable.

Why Dandelions Thrive
Unfortunately, dandelions are not picky about their growing conditions and can thrive in any soil or climate. They are most visible in May and June, although they bloom until October. On average, each plant can produce 10 flower heads, each with between 150 and 200 florets. Each flower produces one seed, meaning that a single plant has the potential to produce up to 2,000 seeds. So if you don’t continue weeding dandelions from your lawn, there will be many possible plants budding.
Design and materials
The Dandelion Weeder is made from a rust-resistant stainless steel combination, ideal when using the tool in wet conditions, and has an FSC certified hardwood handle. The molded handle is especially comfortable and feels like a good solid tool in the hand. Weighing 6oz and measuring 14 inches long, it also has a handy lanyard to hang the tool in your shed to keep everything tidy, although I removed it in mine.
My only criticism is that it can be difficult to spot because the handle is a natural color. I have a tendency to leave tools in the garden and unless they have a brightly colored handle, they seem to disappear! Despite this, I like the traditional look of the tool and that it is plastic-free.
Keeping it clean
Naturally, garden tools tend to get dirty. There is no way to keep a garden implement clean when working in wet soil and conditions. However, I found the dandelion weeder easy to clean and after a few months of dirty work, mine still looks new.
To keep it in good condition, I remove dirt and debris before wiping away any remaining dirt with a cloth after each use. I then store the clean and dry tool in my shed.
