Still undefeated at the start of the season, Liga MX giants Tigres will hope to improve on their performance in last season’s Leagues Cup with a round of 16 match against NYCFC in New Jersey on Tuesday.

UANL was eliminated at this stage of last year’s tournament, being defeated by fellow countrymen Monterrey by a score of 1-0. It will have an easier matchup against NYCFC, which is on a long winless streak and has reached this stage thanks to multiple winning performances in penalty shootouts.

Legendary striker André-Pierre Gignac remains a force at 38 and will be a threat to NYCFC’s lately shaky defense. The club held the team to a scoreless draw in the group stage opener against Querétaro, but has since conceded five goals in two games against FC Cincinnati and the New England Revolution.

Liga MX teams struggled mightily in last year’s competition, but have shown slight improvement this summer and are being led by their strongest clubs. Tigres is firmly entrenched in that elite group along with teams like Club America and Cruz Azul, although Monterrey and Chivas were eliminated in the group stage.
