In a tenure that’s been full of disappointments, the Tennessee Titans somehow reached a new low under Brian Callahan, losing 26-0 to the Houston Texans on Sunday.
The loss now drops them to 0-4 on the year, and 3-18 overall since Callahan took over as head coach (2024). This also marks the first shutout under Cally’s watch – a performance that was somehow even worse than the scoreboard indicates. Just when you think this team has finally hit rock bottom, they always seem to discover another layer they can faceplant into.
Tennessee now leaves Week 4 averaging just 12.7 PPG. At this point, it feels like the writing is on the wall when it comes to Callahan’s future in Tennessee. The Titans could ultimately give him another week or two, but barring something dramatic happening, it seems like that would only be delaying the inevitable.
Nobody wants to admit they got it wrong, especially when you consider the fact that they fired one of the most successful coaches in franchise history (Mike Vrabel) to hand the keys to Callahan.
More importantly, forcing QB Cam Ward to learn a second offense in as many seasons is obviously less than ideal. However, you could argue that forcing him to continue playing for a head coach who is clearly in over his head is much worse. The last thing you want is for him to pick up bad habits that become unshakable for the next staff that comes in to work with Ward.
With that said, it’s time for Titans Owner Amy Adams-Strunk to admit her mistake by putting an end to arguably the worst era in Tennessee Titans history. It’s one thing to just be bad. But the lack of improvement from one year to the next is arguably the most frustrating part about this entire season. They were a three-win team a season ago and they look destined to be a three-win team once again (if that).
Nobody is expecting anybody on the current staff to save the season, but it’s clear that something has to change. The definition of insanity is constantly doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results. Well, through 21 games, Callahan has only won three of ‘em.
The NFL is a results-based business. And right now, the results in Tennessee simply aren’t good enough.
