Australian fans will be treated to two more world title fights in Perth on May 12, when George Kambosos and Vasiliy Lomachenko meet for the vacant IBF lightweight world title.
Organizers have confirmed that Carlos Cuadras’ interim WBC super flyweight title will be on the line when he faces Australian Andrew Moloney, while Cherneka Johnson will look to become a two-time world champion when she challenges Nina Hughes for the bantamweight belt. of the AMB.
Mexico’s Cuadras (42-5-1) has seen it all, having faced many of the biggest stars in the lighter weight classes.
Moloney (26-3) returned to winning ways in December after coming up short when challenging Junto Nakatani for the WBO 115-pound title last May.
“I am absolutely thrilled to have this fight secured. Carlos Cuadras has been with the best of the best at junior bantamweight, and he is the biggest name available in the pision,” Moloney said.
“I was there live to see him fight Juan Francisco Estrada almost seven years ago, and fighting him for the interim world title in Australia is a great opportunity.
“Having Lomachenko and Cuadras fighting in Australia shows how much Australian boxing is flying now, and I’m excited to be a part of it all.”
Johnson (15-2) has not fought since losing her IBF bantamweight title to Ellie Scotney in June and will look to return with a victory against Hughes (6-0) of the United Kingdom.
“I’m excited to fight for a second world title at this great event alongside boxing legends here in Perth,” Johnson said.
“It has been a long journey for me, full of hard work and dedication, and I am determined to become a two-time world champion.
“It’s an honor to fight Nina Hughes, but I’m here to win. On fight night, I will show the world what I am made of.”
Legendary promoter Bob Arum spoke of his excitement for the event following the latest additions to the card.
“I can’t wait to get to the beautiful city of Perth for this historic event,” Arum said.
“Andrew Moloney is in a fantastic fight against one of Mexico’s great champions, and I expect the Hughes-Johnson title fight to be a competitive and dramatic battle at bantamweight.”
