After a very disappointing and forgetful rookie season, wide receiver Jermaine Burton is receiving early praise this offseason. Burton was the 80th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft and never made an impact for the Cincinnati Bengals as a rookie, creating more headlines off the field than on it.
Late in the season, Burton was allegedly involved in a domestic violence assault against his ex-girlfriend, and the Bengals would respond quickly by not allowing him to travel with the team for the season finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers. In total, Burton finished his rookie season playing 14 games, totaling 4 receptions for 107 yards. Working to put last year behind him, Burton has put in noticeable work this offseason, preparing to find a role for himself behind Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins at the wide receiver position.
This week, ESPN released their biggest surprises per team through OTA workouts this offseason, and in somewhat of a shock, Burton was labeled the player who impressed the most, especially considering the point he had to prove. “Burton had one of the worst rookie years imaginable, which only amplified the character concerns he had in college. Heading into this season, Bengals exec Duke Tobin made it clear Burton had to show Cincinnati something.
This offseason, Burton has made all the right moves. He was attentive and engaged throughout the spring workouts. He earned praise from every person who was asked about him, including offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher. “He’s got a good look in his eye,” Pitcher said. “He’s here putting the time in.” Burton has the tools to become a big-play option in special situations.”
While Burton was drafted in a highly-regarded spot in the third round, it was 2023 sixth-round pick Andrei Iosivas who sprung onto the scene with a very productive season last year. Playing in 13 games last year, including 7 starts, Iosivas totaled 27 receptions, 350 yards, and 5 touchdowns which was much more production than Burton gave as a rookie.
If Burton can rise to the occasion in his second season and keep his name out of the news, there will be an intriguing battle for the third receiver spot behind Chase and Higgins. More weapons for quarterback Joe Burrow will make the Bengals offense even scarier than they were in 2024 where they ranked 9th in total offense.
