The UEFA Champions League is the most-watched club football tournament in the world, and winning the title is considered the pinnacle of achievement in the modern club game.
Only two American players have won the UEFA Champions League. Jovan Kirovski became the first in 1997 with Borussia Dortmund, but he was not in the squad for the final. Christian Pulisic’s title in 2021 with Chelsea made him the first American to play in a Champions League final.

While the team as a whole has struggled to produce consistent results at the start of the 2024/25 season, Christian Pulisic has been electric of late for AC Milan. The American has two goals and two assists in the opening four league games of the campaign, putting him in great shape to start the Champions League as an established everyday starter.
USMNT midfielder Yunus Musah has struggled for play early in his career in Milan, starting just one of the first four games of the season, but he has still been a regular in some capacity and will be an important depth piece for the Champions League run.

Weston McKennie has fallen down the pecking order at Juventus, but he has managed to get back there before, both at Juve and other clubs throughout his career, so he could do it again here.
Tim Weah suffered a muscle injury in the season opener and was sidelined for several weeks, but once he returns he should feature heavily in Thiago Motta’s plans.

While Gio Reyna has been a star of the USMNT for years, he has struggled to establish himself at club level. After a failed loan spell at Nottingham Forest during the second half of last season, the 21-year-old playmaker returned to his original club, Borussia Dortmund, hoping to get a chance to prove he belongs as a regular first-team contributor.
Unfortunately, the oft-injured Reyna suffered a muscle issue while on USMNT duty in September that will keep him out of action for some time, hurting his chances of further establishing himself.
Another lesser-known young American from Dortmund is Cole Campbell, an 18-year-old winger from Atlanta United’s academy who has been part of BVB’s youth program for two years and is part of the club’s Champions League squad, although he is unlikely to play a role.

PSV has become a haven for promising young USMNT players looking to build their club careers. Dutch-born Sergino Dest is the club’s most prominent U.S. international, having struggled at Barcelona but is currently recovering from a torn ACL suffered at the end of last season.
Malik Tillman has joined him and has taken off in the Netherlands, establishing himself as a regular in a playmaking role and earning a bigger role with the U.S. national team. Ricardo Pepi is also enjoying life at PSV, albeit stuck behind number one striker Luuk de Jong. Pepi has made the most of his limited playing time, however, scoring crucial goals for the club as a substitute, including the winner against Sevilla in last season’s Champions League that sent PSV into the knockout stages.

Two American defenders have made a strong case for the USMNT to spend time in Scotland.
Cameron Carter-Vickers has been at Celtic since joining from Tottenham three years ago and has rebuilt his career in Glasgow. His centre-back team-mate Auston Trusty, a former Arsenal player, joined him last summer from Sheffield United.
Although CCV is a regular starter for Celtic, Trusty is still working his way into a regular role. The Scottish side have traditionally not performed well in the Champions League, but with a flexible schedule they could reach the knockout stage.

Once one of the most sought-after strikers in the transfer market as he sought to leave Arsenal in search of more playing time, Folarin Balogun has struggled to get his career off the ground at Monaco.
The 23-year-old, who is in his second season with the club, is battling with Swiss international Breel Embolo for the starting striker spot and a few goals in the Champions League could certainly give him a chance to make his mark this season.

Young American goalkeeper Diego Kochen is unlikely to feature in Barcelona’s Champions League race, but the 18-year-old Miami product is technically on the club’s roster for the UEFA competition.
Kochen has been part of Barcelona’s youth team since 2019.
