The Los Angeles Chargers were in need of a wide receiver to step up and make big plays before the season started, and many thought that would be second-round pick Tre Harris. Instead, the rookie has done next to nothing while Quentin Johnston is having a big year.
Harris has seen action on just 25 percent of the team’s offensive plays through the first five games and he has caught only three passes for 45 yards. The team would love to see him become a bigger part of the offense going forward, and fans could begin to see that on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.
According to the team’s injury report, Derius Davis has been ruled out and Quentin Johnston is listed as questionable with a hamstring issue.
That would leave the Chargers with just Ladd McConkey, Keenan Allen, KeAndre Lambert-Smith and Harris as the only healthy wide receivers on the roster. Jalen Reagor, Luke Grimm and JaQuae Jackson would all be options to elevate from the practice squad.
With the team also slated to be far below 100 percent along the offensive line and at running back, Justin Herbert will likely be tasked with making some plays to help the team avoid a third straight loss. McConkey and Allen are solid options, but he needs another guy to step up. If Johnston is unavailable, Harris needs to be that guy.
Rather than having him on the field for one out of every four plays, the Chargers should out him out there three out of every four plays and give him some chances. Herbert should look to him early and maybe even take a deep shot or two against the Dolphins with Harris.
