The Golden State Warriors face an uphill battle to reach the postseason and the job won’t get any easier when they host the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday, January 30.
The Warriors had another classic battle against the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday night. Stephen Curry went toe-to-toe with LeBron James, who made a pair of free throws with 1.2 seconds left to give the Lakers a 145-144 lead in double overtime.
Curry was 9 of 21 from 3-point range and scored 46 points. Curry had his second consecutive game with six or more three-pointers and also his fifth consecutive game with 25 or more points. It was his third 40-point performance this season and the 65th of his career.
Curry has 40 career games in which he has made nine or more three-pointers, which is an NBA record. James had a triple-double with 36 points, 20 rebounds and a career-high 12 assists.
The Warriors had a season-high in points scored and their 23 three-pointers were also season-highs. Golden State used its 15th starting lineup. Draymond Green and Jonathan Kuminga were on the court together for the opener for the first time this season.
The Warriors also had another heartbreaking 134-133 loss to Sacramento on Thursday night in a rematch of the 2023 playoffs. The Warriors eliminated the Kings in the seventh game of their first-round matchup.
The 76ers fight for first place in the Eastern Conference with the Celtics, Bucks, Knicks and Cavaliers.
However, Philadelphia center Joel Embiid, an MVP candidate, has missed time with a left knee injury and the hope is that he can be fully healthy to make the playoffs. Embiid initially injured his knee against the Pacers on January 25.
Embid was unable to play in a 111-105 loss to Denver on Saturday night. Last year, Nuggets fans held “Missing Person” signs after he missed the Sixers game in Denver with right calf soreness. Embid leads the 76ers with 36 points, 11.4 rebounds per game and 1.8 blocks per game. Point guard Tyrese Maxey has also been solid with a team-leading 25.7 points and 6.6 assists.
