Sean O’Malley and Marlon Vera have been a thorn in each other’s side for a long time. The former seeks to even the score when he defends the UFC middleweight title against his rival at UFC 299.
The last time the two fought was in 2020. The brash O’Malley was rising through the ranks, while Vera lost a winning streak before that fight. Vera only needed one round to win by technical knockout.
Since then, O’Malley remained undefeated and defeated Aljamain Sterling for the UFC bantamweight title. Vera is 5-2, beating contender Pedro Munhoz for a shot at gold. O’Malley has improved aspects of his game since they last fought, as has “Chito.” However, if you ask O’Malley’s trainer, Vera’s recent fights didn’t do him any favors.
“I don’t think so [he’s improved] tonne. I don’t think his confidence is going to be high,” coach Tim Welch said in MMA time through Shepherd dog. “And the way he showed up against Cory Sandhagen, Cory Sandhagen shut him down. He barely passed a little, short, without any problems, but Pedro Munhoz, who is not very fast or big, is a little older. So, I don’t think his confidence is very high.

“But Chito is dangerous. He’s very, very good at taking a beating and then winning, which is a dangerous thing. He is very durable; He trains hard, has a good coach and is dangerous. The last time we fought him, [underestimated] him. We thought it was just slow and clumsy, and then that happened. So this time we will not underestimate him.”
