Argentina understandably thought they had seen the last of Canada when they overcame a spirited performance from Jesse Marsch’s side with a 2-0 victory in the opening match of the Copa America.

But the Canadian national team has not lost a match since, surprising Peru with a 1-0 victory and securing Group A advancement with a goalless draw against Chile.

Marsch’s men then beat Venezuela on penalties and will face the Albiceleste again after Lionel Scaloni’s team was also beaten in the final by Ecuador.

As each team looks to secure their return to MetLife Stadium for Sunday’s final, one man could hold their fate in his hands.

Here are all the details on referee Piero Mazo’s record ahead of a clash of contrasts in the Copa America semi-final.

Who is the referee for the Argentina vs Canada match?

Piero Maza leads a Chilean team of seven referees.

Claudio Urrutia and Jose Retamal They are your helpers at night. Juan Lara He is acting as a video assistant referee (VAR), assisted by Edson Cisternas.

Christian Garay He is the fourth referee, with Juan Serrano assuming the functions of fifth referee.

Maza was appointed to the Chilean Primera División for the 2014/15 season and was added to the FIFA List of International Referees in 2018.

That same year, he refereed his first Copa Libertadores match and has overseen 25 games in South America’s premier club competition, including the 2022 semi-final second leg between eventual winners Flamengo and Vélez Sarsfield.

The 2024 Copa América is Maza’s first major international competition.

Argentina will likely not be too disappointed to see Maza, given his first international cap was when they beat Italy 3-0 at Wembley in 2022 to win the Finalísima.

In just his second CONMEBOL World Cup qualifier, Maza took charge of Argentina’s historic 1-0 win over Brazil at the Maracana last November, where he sent off Selecao midfielder Joelinton.
