Undefeated Mexican star Jaime Munguía faces John Ryder in a super middleweight showdown at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona on January 27. The 12-round fight, in addition to the undercard, will be broadcast on DAZN around the world.

Munguía (42-0, 33 KOs) is the former WBO super welterweight champion. The Tijuana star has cycled through the 160 and 168 pound divisions since 2020, but he has yet to land a world championship fight in either of these weight classes.

It’s no surprise that his target is undisputed super middleweight champion and pound-for-pound star, Canelo Alvarez.

“I think a fight against Canelo would be something pretty good for my career and for everyone who wants this fight.” Munguía told ProBox TV.

“First of all, we have to overcome this challenge that we have in front of us with John Ryder, and then we will see what comes next.”

Ryder (32-6, 18 KOs) is a former two-time world title challenger. In 2019, the English southpaw was considered very unlucky in not getting the decision against then WBA and Ring super middleweight champion Callum Smith. In May of last year, Ryder was easily outclassed by Canelo.

“[Munguia’s] last fight with sergiy [Derevyanchenko]. showed some vulnerabilities,” Ryder told Matchroom Boxing.

“He’s made a coaching change to Freddie Roach and that may be a good thing, it may not, we’ll see. I know what he brings to the table, he takes a lot of shots and he takes them with bad intentions.” , but that’s when I think I can take advantage of it.”

Jaime Munguia vs. John Ryder Prediction, Best Bets

I have to stick with the young man in this fight. Munguia is 27 and Ryder is 35. While I think the two are well matched in terms of skill, that eight-year age difference is likely to come into play.

I have almost no doubt that the super tough Ryder will be successful. He is a sharp puncher and his ability to create angles and use his left-handed stance to his advantage will give Munguía attacks. The problem will be maintaining that strategy in a fast-paced 12-round fight.

The best victory of Ryder’s career came when he defeated former middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs in February 2022. However, Jacobs gave Ryder room to work in a tactical boxing match. In this confrontation, the Englishman will be pressured from bell to bell.

It will be a much tougher fight than many expect, but I predict Munguia will close the scoring gap from the halfway point and secure a close but clear unanimous decision victory.

Jugo Mobile Prediction: Munguía via UD 12 (By BetMGM: -333)
