Pound-for-pound star Teofimo Lopez will make the first defense of his WBO and Ring Magazine super lightweight titles when he takes on tough contender Jamaine Ortiz at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas on Thursday, February 8. more action from the card, will be broadcast on ESPN+ in the US.

Lopez (19-1, 13 KOs) is coming off a 12-round unanimous decision victory over previously undefeated Scot Josh Taylor in June. This victory made “The Takeover” a two-weight world champion and also reestablished his pound-for-pound credentials that were lost when he was surprisingly outclassed by George Kambosos in 2021.

Ortiz (19-1-1, 8 KOs) is best known for his only loss. In October 2022, the Massachusetts-born fighter pushed former three-weight world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko all the way in a points loss. Despite that setback, Ortiz’s stock rose dramatically and the 27-year-old is ranked among the best lightweights in the world today.

And while Ortiz is now moving up to a new weight class, Lopez is also relatively new to the 140-pound division, having moved up in August 2022.
