Why does my Brother printer appear offline?

When trying to print something from your computer, you may sometimes find that your printer appears offline. There are many reasons for this, most of which can be solved quite easily.

This also applies to printers manufactured by Brother. Although solutions may differ from model to model, the suggestions in this article should cover most scenarios.

Why does a printer appear offline?

If you ever see the “Printer Offline” message while trying to print something, it could be due to one of these reasons:

1. The printer is not turned on.
2. Your printer is offline.
3. The printer you are trying to use is not set as the default printer.
4. A previous print job is stuck in the print queue.
5. The printer is set to Offline or Paused status.
6. There are multiple copies of the same printer.
7. Your printer driver for your operating system is not working correctly.

Fortunately, it’s not that difficult to fix most of these problems yourself.

No energy

The first thing you should do when your printer appears to be offline is to check if it is turned on. If your printer has an LCD screen, check if it is blank. If you don’t have a screen on your printer, check to see if any of the LED lights are on.

If the printer does not appear to be turned on, press the “Power” button on your printer. If that didn’t wake you up, check the cable that connects the printer to the outlet. Perhaps the cord is loose or the outlet is not receiving power.

If everything seems fine and your printer is turned on, check if there are any error messages on your LCD screen. If so, check your printer manual to find out the type of error and how to fix it.

If none of these actions helped, it’s time to move on to the next section.

Not connected

The next step is to check if the connection between the printer and your computer is working correctly.

For USB connections, check to see if both ends of the cable fit snugly into either port. Also, avoid using USB hubs or extenders. It is important to have a direct USB connection between your computer and the printer.

For local networks, make sure the Ethernet cable has not come loose at the printer end. The other end is usually connected to a router or switch. If you don’t have access to that, ask your network administrator to help you with this.

For Wi-Fi connections, make sure the network is working properly. You may want to reset your Wi-Fi router, just to make sure that’s not the problem.

Not set as default printer

Once you’re sure the printer is turned on and connected to your computer, it’s time to check the software side of the problem. The first thing you should do is see if the printer you are trying to use is set as the default for your computer.

1. press the windows button in the bottom left corner of the screen, start typing “control Panel” and then open Control Panel.
2. Now click Hardware and sound.
3. Then select Devices and printersyou can also click View devices and printers on the previous screen.
4. In the list of printers, find the printer you want to use. Check if there is a green check mark on the printer icon. This indicates whether it is set as default.
5. Otherwise, right click on the printer icon and select Set as default printer.

This should change the status of your printer from offline to online. If not, see the next section.

A print job is stuck

If a document you sent to your printer did not print, it could be for several reasons. For example, the file is too large for the printer’s memory to handle. Or your computer went to sleep while sending the print job, thus corrupting the process.

Whatever the reason, it’s time to check if there are any pending jobs in your printer queue.

1. Follow steps 1 to 4 in the previous section to open the list of available printers.
2. Next, right click on your printer icon and click See what’s printing.
3. The list of current print jobs appears.
4. Now click on the Printer tab at the top of that window and then click Cancel all documents to clear the print queue.
5. If he Cancel all documents The option is grayed out, click Open as administrator. Enter the administrator password and click Yeah to enable this option.

There may be no jobs stuck waiting to print. Or maybe clearing the queue didn’t help get your printer online. If so, continue to the next section.

Printer status changed

It may happen that the system automatically sets the status of your printer to Offline or Paused.

1. Right click on your printer icon and see if Use the printer offline either Pause printing Options have a check mark next to them. If so, click each one to uncheck them.

Multiple printers

There is also a possibility that there are multiple copies of the same printer on your computer. This can happen if you connected the printer to a different USB port on your computer. Additionally, installing the same printer driver multiple times will create an extra copy each time.

If there are multiple copies of the same printer, hover your mouse over each icon until the status popup appears. The printer you are looking for should have “Status: Ready” in the pop-up window. Once you’ve found it, delete the other copies.

Printer drivers

If none of this helped, the last option is to reinstall the printer drivers.

1. To do this, go to brother support page and click downloads.
