Netflix is raising big questions on social media by repeatedly posting “You are insects.” The streaming giant has gone so far as to put the message in his Instagram and Twitter bios, and even changed the cover photo of him to recite the message in the latter.
Wondering what “You are insects” means? The phrase comes from the new science fiction series. 3 Body problemwhich premiered on March 21, 2024 on the streamer.
Based on the novel by Liu CixinThe three body problemby Liu Cixin, the series follows a group of scientists and a detective as they work together to solve a major threat to humanity.
The series is linked to a revolution in China in the 1960s, in which the militant party chanted “eradicate insects.”
According TudumThe protests were aimed at getting rid of “any infiltrators of the communist revolution, including scientists and academics.”
In episode 4, “Our Lord”, billionaire and former radical environmentalist Mike Evans (Jonathan Pryce) refers to the people trying to destroy his organization as “pests” while talking to the Lord (San-Ti).
Mike says, “These pests that are following us are trying to hide their intentions because otherwise they wouldn’t be able to get to us.” The Lord does not realize that Mike is speaking figuratively and responds robotically: “Pests are insects or other destructive animals that attack crops, food, and livestock. Your enemies are humans.”
Mike says he was “using a metaphor” and describing people as “pests” because they are “annoying, inconsequential, easy to get rid of, like bugs you can squash under your shoe.”
At the end of the next episode, every screen on Earth broadcasts the ominous message “you are insects,” hinting that humanity is in danger.
DB Weiss, who co-created the series with David Benioff and Alexander Woo, spoke about the scene with Tudum“It’s just kind of a fear and shock component. [with] ‘You are insects,’” Weiss said. “We knew [we] It would create some really cool, really funny shots of Piccadilly covered in screens saying ‘you are insects’, the Buddhist monk’s phone telling him: ‘you are insects’.”
People reacted in shock to Netflix’s cryptic tweets, with several suspecting that the streaming giant had been hacked and the message was being published accidentally. A person wrote“Alright, who pissed off Netflix’s Twitter intern?” and another tweeted“I think a senior programmer is having a bad day at Netflix.”
