Microsoft has released a new Windows 11 update that introduces a number of features and fixes. Those enrolled in the Windows Insider program have had access to these features since late February 2024, but this update now offers them to all Windows 11 users. This is a required update as it is part of the April cumulative update.

Voice access
You can now use multi-screen voice access features in Windows 11, including number and grid overlays. If you are using the grid overlay on one screen, you can now quickly switch to another screen. In the past, you could only do this on the main screen. Additionally, you can also use the “mouse grid” command to quickly move the mouse to a specific point on a screen. Finally, you can now use drag and drop to move files, apps, and documents from one screen to another.
This update also introduces voice shortcuts or custom commands. With these, you will be able to create your own commands in the supported English dialects. The “show voice shortcuts” command opens the voice shortcuts page where you can create new shortcuts. You can view all the voice shortcuts you have created by going to the command help page or by using the “show voice shortcuts” voice command.
Storyteller
Narrator now has ten natural voices, which you can preview before downloading. The voices use text-to-speech on your device, and once you’ve downloaded them, they’ll work without an internet connection. However, you will still need an internet connection to preview the voices.
The Narrator update improves detection of text in images (including handwriting) and improves image description. Narrator will now announce bookmarks and drafts in Microsoft Word if it detects them. Now you can also use voice access to open apps, dictate text, and interact with elements on the screen. And if you want, you can use your voice to command the Narrator if, for example, you want him to speak faster or read the next line.
share windows
The way apps appear in the Windows sharing window has changed due to this update. Depending on the account you’re signed in to, you’ll see different apps in the “Share using” p. This could be useful if, for example, you’re switching between your work Microsoft account and your personal account.
Another cool feature is that you can now share on WhatsApp in the “Share using” p. If you use WhatsApp, this could be very useful for you.
Share nearby
Nearby sharing lets you share files wirelessly with other devices. Microsoft has improved the transfer speed of the feature for faster file transfer. This feature now works on public or private networks, whereas previously it only worked on private networks.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are now automatically turned on if you enable Nearby Sharing in Settings, even if you have them turned off. Additionally, you can give your device a different name to identify it when sharing.
Foundry
Casting allows you to wirelessly send content on your device’s screen to a nearby PC, TV, or other external display. This feature has been updated to make your device more discoverable. The Cast drop-down menu in quick settings also helps you find more nearby devices to cast, fix connections, and more.
Instant designs
Snap Layouts is a useful feature that allows you to quickly snap applications and windows on your desktop into the layout of your choice. This latest Windows update adds new suggested layouts, which might be helpful if you feel limited by the previously available selections.
