What are ‘roles’ in Discord?

In Discord terminology, a role is a defined set of permissions with a name. For example, there is a default role called “@everyone”, which grants a wide range of basic permissions, such as talking on the server and reading messages.

A server administrator could create a “Moderator” role, which would add the ability to mute or ban other users. Users can also have multiple roles, meaning someone who has the @everyone and Moderator roles would have all the powers of @everyone plus the powers of Moderator.

How to create roles in discord

Setting up your roles correctly is the key to managing your users on a Discord server. It’s a good idea to create the basic roles before you even start inviting people to the server. You can always come back and add new roles or reconfigure existing ones when you’re in business. Here’s how to create roles in Discord.

1. Login to Discord and access your server.
   
2. Select the small drop-down arrow to the right of the server name and click Server configuration.
   
3. Click Roles in the left panel.
   
4. Click on Create role.
   
5. You will see your new role listed as New role.

How to assign roles in Discord using Windows/Mac/Linux

To assign multiple members simultaneously when using a Mac or Windows PC, go to Server configuration and touch Rolesthen do the following:

1. Click the role you would like your members to have.
   
2. Click on Manage members.
   
3. Click on Add members.
   
4. Click the check boxes next to each member who should have that role and click Add.
   

If you only need to add one or two members, this method is faster:

To quickly add/remove members or modify permissions, all you need to do is return to the page Server configuration and click roles, just like we did above. Then, follow these steps:

1. Click the role you want to change.
   
2. Select Permissions to control what members can do on your server.
   
3. Select Manage members to add or remove members.
   

As your community grows, you can add others. Because roles must be added inpidually for each user, the most effective use of your time is to put as many of your server’s policy decisions as possible in the @everyone role.
