The Eastern Conference playoff picture remains as murky as ever with just a handful of games left in the season.
The Celtics have been dominant, beating 63 of their 81 opponents en route to the best record in basketball. However, everything behind them is shrouded in mystery, as only four games separate second place from eighth.
Such unpredictability is part and parcel of Eastern Conference tradition. In recent seasons, the East has routinely seen teams jockey for position in the waning days of the regular season.
The Heat are no stranger to such circumstances. In fact, they found themselves in an equally precarious position just a year ago, tied for eighth place in the East after surviving the play-in challenge.
Erik Spoelstra’s team rebounded in the following rounds, defeating the No. 1-seeded Bucks, No. 4-seeded Knicks, and No. 2-seeded Celtics to reach the NBA Finals. NBA.

How the Heat can clinch the No. 6 seed in the East
Miami is one game behind the Pacers for sixth place. The Heat will need a lot of help to displace either of the two teams directly above them in the standings (Magic, 76ers).
For Miami to have any chance of claiming the sixth seed in the East, it would need Orlando and Philadelphia to collapse. The Magic would have to abandon their last game. If that were to happen, and the Heat won their final game, Miami would overtake Orlando due to their superior head-to-head record.

How does the NBA Play-In tournament work?
The NBA Play-In Tournament will take place after the conclusion of the 2023-24 regular season and before the start of the first round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs. Teams that finish 1-6 in the standings of each conference will be guaranteed playoff spots. Teams numbers 7 to 10 will enter the Play-In tournament.
The No. 7 and No. 8 teams from each conference will face off, with the winner earning the No. 7 seed in the playoffs. The loser will still have one more chance to make the playoffs.
The No. 9 and 10 teams from each conference will face off, with the winner advancing to play the loser of the No. 7 vs. No. 8 tournament game. The loser of No. 9-vs.-No. 10 games will be eliminated from playoff contention.
