Discord’s default interface is designed specifically to support the gaming and communication experience. It offers users many customization possibilities, including the ability to change your background. You can toggle between “Dark,” “Light,” or “Sync with your computer” themes. For more sophisticated options, you’ll need to install the BetterDiscord app.

This article will show you how to change Discord background on multiple devices using the built-in options and the official app.

How to change your background or theme in Discord on PC

You can change your appearance on Discord by choosing one of the built-in options or by choosing a theme on the BetterDiscord website. Here we explain how to do both things from your PC:

Integrated options:

1. Launch the Discord app on your PC.
   
2. Select the “User Settings” gear option at the bottom of the left panel.
   
3. Under “App Settings”, select “Appearance”.
   
4. In the “Theme” section, choose “Dark,” “Light,” or “Sync with your computer.”
   
5. Click the “Esc” button to return to the home screen and the chosen theme will be applied.
   

Best Discord:

1. Navigate to the BetterDiscord.app to install the application.
2. Click the “Download (version)” button to download the latest installer.
   
3. Once completed, open the BetterDiscord windows.exe file to begin the installation.
   
4. Follow the on-screen prompts. The app will restart once installed.
   
5. To change the theme, visit the Topics page on the BetterDiscord website.
   
6. Choose the theme and then download it to the Discord themes folder. The default path is usually: “C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\BetterDiscord\themes”.
   
7. Alternatively, open the theme folder and copy it to it. Then, go to Discord’s “User Settings.”
8. Then, go to “BetterDiscord Topics” to make sure the one you’ve chosen is enabled.
   

To stop using BetterDiscord, you will need its installer. If you no longer have it, download it again, then:

1. Accept the license agreement and click “Next.”
   
2. Select “Uninstall BetterDiscord”.
   
3. Choose the path/version, then “Uninstall.”
   

How to change your background in Discord on an Android device

BetterDiscord does not support mobile devices yet, so you can customize your background or theme using a built-in option. Here’s how to do this:

1. Open the Discord app.
   
2. At the bottom, tap the “User Settings” gear icon.
   
3. Under “App Settings”, choose “Appearance”.
   
4. Select your preferred theme and look and enjoy.
   

How to change your background in Discord on an iPhone

You can change your Discord background/theme to one of the built-in options, as BetterDiscord does not support mobile devices. Follow these steps to change your theme:

1. Launch the Discord app.
   
2. Tap the “User Settings” gear icon at the bottom.
   
3. Under “App Settings,” tap “Appearance.”
   
4. Select your preferred theme and appearance.
   

Your choice will now be displayed.

How to change your background in a Discord video?

To display a virtual background during your Discord video calls, equip your PC with the following settings:

• GPU: NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 2060, Quadro RTX 3000, TITAN RTX or higher.
• RAM: 8GB RAM.
• CPU: Intel Core i5 8600 recommended, AMD Ryzen r5 2060 and above.
• Driver: NVIDIA Display Driver version 456.38 and higher.
• Operating system: Windows 10 64-bit.
• A stable Internet connection.

1. Go to the NVIDIA streaming page.
2. Click the “Download Now” button.
3. The app should open after installation. Otherwise, you may need to use the appropriate NVIDIA stream to download the “R455 driver”.
4. To do this, visit the NIVIDA GEFORCE Drivers page.
5. To find the driver for your system, fill out the form. For “Product Type”, select the GPU you have.
6. Under “Download Type,” select “Game Ready Driver.”
7. Click the “Start Search” button and then “Download” to download the driver.
8. Close the game-ready controller and the NVIDIA Broadcast app.
9. Reopen the NVIDIA Broadcast app and then select the “Camera” tab.
10. Under “Camera Source”, select your webcam and resolution.
11. Once you get to “Effects”, you will have four options:
    • “Background Blur” blurs the area behind you.
    • “Background Replacement” allows you to display a virtual background image. This option and “background blur” do not require a green screen to work.
    • “Background removal” applies a black background that can be left as is or you can show something, like your game.
    • “Auto framing” centers the camera around your head no matter where you move.
12. Once you’ve chosen your camera background effect, open the Discord app.
13. Click “User Settings.”
14. Select “Voice & Video.”
15. Under “Video Settings,” select “Camera (NVIDIA Broadcast)” instead of your webcam.
16. Click the “Esc” button to return to the home screen.

Once set up, you can switch between different background types through the NVIDIA Broadcast app.
