Liverpool are, in terms of trophies, the most successful team in English football. In 2024, they aim to achieve a historic victory over four major titles.
Although they had faded somewhat in recent decades, the arrival of Jurgen Klopp in 2015 revitalized the club. The German manager took Liverpool to back-to-back Champions League finals and has seen them compete with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, with the teams competing against each other in domestic competitions.
Winning the EFL Cup (Carabao Cup) had been routine for Guardiola, having lifted the trophy in every season from 2017/18 to 2020/21. However, the sequence was broken in 2021/22, when Manchester City were eliminated from the competition by West Ham in the fourth round. Liverpool reached the final, where they faced Chelsea. In a repeat of that Carabao Cup final, Liverpool also won the 2021/22 FA Cup, defeating Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after another 0-0 draw. A save by Alisson Becker in the penalty shootout and a conversion by Konstantinos Tsimikas secured the second of the four pieces of silverware the club was chasing.
In the end, Liverpool fell agonizingly short of a historic quadruple, missing out on the league title to Man City by a single point and losing the 2022 UEFA Champions League final to Real Madrid. However, they are on track to attempt a similar feat again in 2024.
With the Carabao Cup won, a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals secured and league and UEFA Europa League campaigns underway, Klopp could celebrate a famous final season in charge at Anfield.
Has any team won the quadruple?
The legendary quadruple is extremely difficult and has proven impossible in the modern (post-1992) era of the Champions League.
It involves a team winning its national league, a continental competition and both national cups. It is worth noting that, with these criteria, teams from Spain, Italy, Germany and France cannot win even a quadruple. Unlike England, which has both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup (Carabao Cup), these countries only have one domestic cup competition.
France had a second cup competition, the Coupe de la Ligue, which ran between 1993 and 2020, but it was suspended to reduce the number of matches in the season and there has been little talk of bringing it back.
Some would say that other competitions could constitute a quadruple, such as the FIFA Club World Cup or the UEFA Super Cup. For example, Bayern Munich technically won four trophies in 2012/2013, including the Champions League, but there was also a DFL Super Cup (the equivalent of the Community Shield). While these are certainly achievements, some purists wouldn’t count them as part of a genuine quad.
With this in mind, some English teams have come close to achieving the quadruple feat in the past.
In the 2018/19 season, Manchester City won all three domestic trophies, but was eliminated from the Champions League in the quarterfinals, thus only achieving a treble.
City rivals Manchester United completed a treble of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in 1998/99. They were eliminated from the EFL Cup by Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter-finals. City repeated that triple feat in 2022/23, but their EFL Cup campaign ended with a surprise 2-0 defeat to Southampton.
Liverpool came close to a quadruple in 2021/22, winning the EFL Cup and FA Cup, reaching the Champions League final and closing in on City in the league title race, but ultimately ended the season winning just those two. national cup competitions. They have another chance to achieve the feat in 2023/24, although they compete in Europe’s secondary competition, the Europa League, rather than the Champions League.
However, the quadruple has been done before.
The Scottish club Celtic achieved it in the 1966/67 season. Jock Stein’s team won the European Cup, Scottish First Division, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup, to complete a quartet of major trophies. They also won the Glasgow Cup, although the importance of that trophy can be debated.

Which teams have won the treble?
Two English clubs have completed a treble of league title, FA Cup and European Cup/Champions League in the same season. Manchester United did it first, in 1998/99, and rival Manchester City repeated that feat in 2022/23.
City were the first team to achieve a domestic treble in 2018/19, when they lifted the Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup in the same season.
Liverpool have achieved two trebles in their history. In the 2000/01 season they won the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and EFL Cup. Previously, in 1983/1984, they managed to win the league, the EFL Cup and the European Cup.
